Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies - College of Engineering

The Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Engineering is primarily responsible for developing and enhancing the First-Year seminar program for engineering undergraduates. This role will also involve academic advising, student support, program planning, and curriculum development to ensure the highest standards of education and inclusivity. This position will report directly to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Core Responsibilities:

First-Year Experience Program:

  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate the First-Year Seminar for undergraduates in the College of Engineering to ensure a high-quality educational and professional experience.
  • Identify opportunities and support curricular innovations specifically aimed at first-year students through comprehensive assessments of current programs.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of first-year onboarding efforts, including Orientation Week
  • Select students and serve as advisor for the First-Year Advisory Board
  • Plan extracurricular activities for first-year students outside of the First Year Seminar, as needed.

Academic Advising and Student Support:

  • Serve as an academic advisor for first-year engineering students.
  • Monitor advisee progress.
  • Participate in external and internal transfer applications review.
  • Work with Counseling & Psychological Services (CaPS), Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC), Office of Disability Resources, Student Academic Success Center, and other support services to provide assistance for students.

Admissions and Recruitment:

  • Discuss College of Engineering undergraduate programs with prospective students and their guardians
  • Contribute to the recruitment of talented, qualified applicants to the College of Engineering by representing the College at internal and external recruiting events.
  • Participate in the external transfer process with admissions.

Committee Participation and Collaboration:

  • Participate in meetings of the Undergraduate Advisors Council (UAC)
  • Participate in other College and University meetings as needed.

Complete other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven experience in academic advising, administration, program development, and student support services
  • Strong leadership and team collaboration skills
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting.
  • This role requires some evening and weekend work hours as well as travel.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with academic advising and student support services
  • A commitment to work with a culturally diverse environment and interact with campus community and external customers.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Google Suite. Ability to learn a variety of software applications.
