Job Summary
#CA-FT This position supports the departmental purpose by providing skilled anatomical laboratory services, including accessioning, grossing, and assisting with intraoperative consultations, within Anatomic Pathology. Ensures timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning and grossing analysis and assists with intraoperative consultations. Performs scheduled maintenance, testing and quality control processes on complex automated equipment and instruments, including the preparation of reagents. Performs accurate and efficient grossing procedures for biopsies and minor surgical specimens under the direction of a pathologist. Assists with daily triaging and processing of resection specimens for frozen section, research, routine processing and/or ancillary studies. - Incumbent must possess the minimum level of training/experience for non-Pathologist personnel performing gross examinations as outlined by CLIA and College of American Pathologists (CAP) and provide documentation to demonstrate compliance.
- An earned bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution
- Previous experience working in a clinical anatomic laboratory.
- Must possess working knowledge of medical terminology, basic human anatomy and technical knowledge to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of basic chemistry and biology for understanding methods used in the laboratory.
- Ability to work with hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practice of Universal Precautions.
- Demonstrated ability to perform a special procedure according to established protocols.
- Ability to maintain accurate, legible records.
- Ability to safely lift up to 40 lbs unassisted.Technical and mechanical skills necessary to operate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment as well as general laboratory maintenance.
- Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining accuracy and minimizing errors and remain flexible in changing work environment.
- Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to independently manage and prioritize an extensive and varied workload, meet multiple deadlines, and achieve timely progress in specimen processing.
- Ability to prioritize work based upon departmental turnaround requirements and priority requests.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in an Anatomic Pathology Laboratory setting (e.g. Histology, Grossing, Cytology)
- Previous experience grossing biopsies and minor surgical specimens.
- Knowledge and experience with cryofreezing and cutting frozen sections using a cryostat.
- Experience using EPIC.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) system and other basic computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, email, internet, etc.).
- Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.G. CDPH, CAP, TJC, NAACLS, OSHA).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; documents and reports clearly and concisely; conveys instructions, directions and information appropriately.

Department Overview The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in patient care, population health, education, technology and research. Work Environment Must have the ability to work with potentially biohazardous tissue specimens as well as hazardous chemicals and waste in a congested environment.Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs. Incumbent will also be required to utilize body mechanics (walking, sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, and reaching) when necessary to complete all job duties and functions.Must be able to work variable shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, and must be able to work occasional overtime as required and respond to "on-call" requirements.
