Background
Parking & Transportation Services is a self-supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet, streets, walkways and way-finding. PTS supports alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle and promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool or take the bus. The department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and administers the fuel credit card, vehicle insurance and safety, and employee driver training programs.

PTS Mission
Facilitating safe and effective integrated transportation systems that provide services for pedestrians, bicycles, transit and vehicles.

Responsibilities

85% Custodial duties for PTS infrastructure
* Cleaning of parking surface and surrounding areas for all parking facilities (garages, ramps and lots)
o Litter pick, hand sweeping, service trash and recycling receptacles at vehicle exits
o Wipe down fire extinguishers in ramps and/garages and maintenance areas
o Wipe down access control equipment
o Power sweeping, including performing preventative maintenance on power sweepers after use
o Remove debris and excessive dirt from drains
o Clean parking booths - Glass cleaning, vacuum floor, mop tiles, empty garbage, replenish supplies (Windex, paper towels, and trash bags)
* Replace and/or adjust gate arms
* Clean University transit shelters - Sweep shelter, clean benches and glass, pick up litter, trash, recycling, remove graffiti, stickers, tape and unauthorized postings, and observe for damage and/or safety related problems
* Assist with installing and moving bike racks/ lockers as needed
* Assist with abandoned bike removal as needed - Includes assisting in tagging, recording and removal of abandoned bikes, maintaining storage room and moving out bikes when needed
* Pot hole patching on University streets
* Sign work on University Streets - Sign pole straightening, sign realignment and securing, replacement of signs and poles
* Use specialized tools and equipment to assist customers with jump starts, lock-outs, and tire inflations (Motorist Assistance Program)
* Deliver, set up/remove barricades and cones for event traffic control
* Maintain parking access barricades type I, II, III - Remove screws, tape, adhesive, minor repair, collect other provider's traffic control left throughout campus areas and call vendors for pick-up
* Create and post signs alerting customers to upcoming work
* Assist with deliveries
* Other duties as assigned

15% Seasonal duties related to keeping PTS facilities clean, safe and accessible
* Snow and ice maintenance at ramp top pedestrian access areas to stairwells and elevator lobbies, pedestrian access to/from surface lots using shovels and snow blowers.
* Snow and ice maintenance to detail clean transit shelters/stops where University bus service stops
* Snow and ice maintenance as additional needs arise including possibility of using skid loaders.
* Respond to needs for seasonal over-time hours related to major events, snow and ice management and/or other emergencies.

Work Environment________________________________________________________

This position requires primarily fieldwork that is completed outdoors. Work in most facilities requires exposure to weather and seasonal elements (heat, cold, snow). Facility lay-outs include varying/uneven surfaces and stairwells. This position requires walking, climbing stairs and/or ladders, and operating motor vehicles, skid-loaders, power sweepers, etc. Exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and elements possible. Position requires the ability to walk or stand for majority of day; bend, climb, reach, kneel; carry, lift, push and pull 50 lbs. or more.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
* Valid driver's license
* Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to read, write, and communicate competently in English is essential for safety and customer service reasons. Must be proven able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, equipment manuals, work orders, schematics, and drawings.
* One year of experience with various types of shop work, equipment, and practices.
* Familiarity with all equipment and practices related to maintenance and custodial duties, including leaf blowers, snow blowers, skid-loaders, power sweepers, etc.
