Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
PRIMARY PURPOSES:
Reporting to the Chair of Diagnostic Sciences, the incumbent will be responsible for ICS III Course oversight as well as Coordination of Interprofessional Activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

ICS III DS303 is designed to build and expand on the knowledge gained during the first two years of dental school. The course covers twelve different Themes over three quarters. These Themes are arranged in an order that is designed to facilitate passage of National Boards, but more importantly the entire course is designed to strengthen skills in critical thinking and the use of published evidence in decision making. In private practice, dentists will need to present well thought out and concise treatment plans to patients. Well executed presentations of treatment plans will greatly increase patient acceptance and satisfaction. Faculty members from various departments will facilitate a two hour discussion of the Theme assigned to each session. They will be assisted by additional faculty from contributing departments; and there will be assigned reading for each Theme. Following the discussion portion each week, three to four students will present clinical cases.

  • the incumbent will work with content experts to coordinate content of Themes
  • Coordinate course schedule.
  • Manage course material posting on the Canvas educational management system.
  • Oversee continual course assessment and revision where necessary.
  • Facilitate creation of assessments in conjunction with Theme presenters.
  • Deliver course material, as needed, in a variety of formats to include: lectures, seminars and clinic sessions.
  • Teaching in ICS I II and other Diagnostic Sciences activities as designated by Chair.
  • Clinical teaching as designated by Chair in Main Clinic in San Francisco and Sacramento campuses.
  • Participate in School Functions, both during school hours and at other times as directed by the School Administration or Department Chair.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may include assisting with administrative tasks, supporting project management, and contributing to department operations as needed.
  • Have the flexibility to travel to the Sacramento campus when required, supporting cross-campus initiatives and collaboration.


In addition to the duties of course direction for ICS III, the incumbent will also lead the efforts to enhance Interprofessional Education opportunities.
At the Dugoni School, Interprofessional Education encompasses: extramural rotations, in-class seminars: Chair of the IPE Committee.
Content within IPE includes:

  • Social awareness of special needs populations. Students gain valuable experience in caring for patients whose access to care may be limited by economics, medical complications, or geographic circumstances.
  • Clinical efficiency. Students will have the opportunity to work with a seasoned preceptor who can impart practical dental knowledge and aid the student in increasing their clinical speed.
  • Professional competence and self-confidence. Through rotations, it is expected that students will gain composure and self-confidence as they work closely with their preceptor faculty.
  • Patient management. As each clinic is somewhat different site to site, students will develop the ability to think quickly and act appropriately in unfamiliar clinical environments and with a variety of patient populations.
  • Perspective and understanding about the opportunities for dentists to reach patients who are often left out of the dental care system.
  • An opportunity to evaluate contemporary and emerging models of oral healthcare delivery, understand dentistry's role in the larger health care system and strive to reduce barriers to care.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional health care team to improve oral-systemic health, enhance the patient experience and reduce risk.
  • Representing the school in University IPE Committees.

The incumbent will seek additional extramural rotation sites by working with the IPE Committee and other stakeholders.

Additional Elements:
Regular teaching evaluation will be provided by the Chair of the Department, peers, and students; this process includes ratings of Teaching, Scholarship, and Service. It is expected that the incumbent will produce scholarship per the University and School of Dentistry guidelines to be found in the Faculty Handbook under the Promotion and Tenure section. Participation in service activities including, but not limited to committees, taskforces, and other service-related activities is expected. The incumbent is expected to provide in-person teaching at the School of Dentistry's Sacramento campus at the discreet the Chair of Diagnostic Sciences, as well as clinical teaching
in the Main Clinic at either site.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:

  • General dentistry principles.


Ability to:

  • Provide effective curricular oversight of DS 303 Integrated Clinical Sciences III
  • Provide effective curricular oversight of DS 307 Extramural Programs
  • Communicate effectively with administration, staff, students and public through oral and written communications.
  • Develop and deliver presentations.
  • Analyze problems, provide solutions and implement recommendations.
  • Prepare and present reports concisely and logically.
  • Effectively manage projects and deadlines with close attention to detail
  • Work with minimal supervision.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of practical dental experience working in a private practice or Community Healthcare setting.
  • Experience in collaboration within teams.

Education:

  • DDS or DMD degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience:

  • Experience in a professional, medical or dental school highly desirable.


Other:

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements

  • Work performed is primarily general office/administrative; frequent use of computer keyboard and phone.
  • Requires sitting majority of the working day; occasional standing, bending and walking.
  • May require standing for periods of time when teaching.

Hiring Range $135,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
