Director of Simulation and Experiential Learning in Nursing

The Director of Simulation and Experiential Learning in Nursing provides leadership and comprehensive oversight for the daily operations of the nursing program's on-campus experiential learning, including simulation and laboratory-based activities. This administrative staff leadership position oversees the scheduling, utilization planning, and inventory needs of the simulation and lab spaces. This role also supports the pedagogy development needs of simulation/lab faculty, supervises laboratory staff, and oversees the multifaceted day-to-day operations of current and future experiential lab and simulation activities within the school.

This position in collaboration with the Dean/Associate Dean, Director of Nursing- Clinical Education, Nursing Chair, track coordinators/director and individual faculty ensures high quality planning, delivery and evaluation of lab and simulation-based educational experiences. This role supports the attainment of expected learning and programmatic outcomes related to lab and SBE for students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. In addition, the Director of Simulation and Experiential Learning in Nursing engages internally with the Center for Innovation and with external partners seeking professional development opportunities and includes development of future certificates and non-degree programs to support healthcare professionals seeking specialty skills, credentials/micro-credentials, and badges.

Essential Functions:

1. Operations:
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations including:
    • Managing sim/lab schedules;
    • Monitoring lab space utilization and efficiency;
    • Maintaining equipment safety and functionality and ensuring available supplies.
  • Collaborates in strategic planning of Simulation/experiential lab initiatives at the school:
    • Works internally with the Curry Center for Innovation and externally with affiliates to build professional development and healthcare programming opportunities.

2. Fiscal:
  • Collaborates with the school Dean in the development and management of the simulation/lab operations and capital budget needs;
  • Identifies and participates in the pursuit of relevant grant opportunities;
  • Works with external vendors to obtain quotes/invoices;
  • Makes recommendations regarding future equipment purchases, product adoption and/or other capital items to enhance the simulation/lab learning and spaces.

3. Administrative:
  • Contributes to the development, ongoing review, and enforcement of policies and procedures to ensure safe, effective, and efficient use of the simulation/lab spaces, equipment and supplies;
  • Acts as ex-officio permanent member of the Nursing Simulation Advisory Committee;
  • Participates in the development of reports (regulatory and accrediting body) and provides simulation/lab and experiential learning related data for surveys;
  • Supervises the simulation operations specialist role;
  • Manages the Standardized Participant program including the stewarding of current and recruitment of new volunteer pools.

4. Academic/Curriculum:
  • Contributes to the curriculum design of simulation and lab-based activities, ensuring alignment with the school mission and goals and in accordance with professional nursing standards;
  • Ensures simulation-based learning activities meet the INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards for Best Practices TM ;
  • Collaborates with faculty to collect simulation/experiential evaluation data for continuous quality improvement related to curriculum and program outcomes;
  • Supports the evaluation of student learning outcomes, faculty performance, and scenario effectiveness;
  • Promotes scholarship and research related to simulation-based education;
  • Acts as a consultant for faculty during development of evidence-based simulation scenarios and/or experiential lab activities;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing for clinical education, track coordinators, and individual faculty to design simulation/experiential lab make up or other remediation activities.

5. Professional Development of Self and Others
  • Maintains up to date competency in simulation-based pedagogy evidence by:
    • Holding the CHSE credential;
    • Completing continuing education in simulation/ experiential teaching learning practices;
    • Creating a culture that promotes simulation learning methods by acting as the school "champion for SBE".
  • Provides faculty development opportunities for peers on Simulation teaching and learning;
  • Acts as a resource and mentor to faculty who are developing pedagogy skills in simulation and other experiential teaching/learning methods;
  • Networks with other healthcare simulation experts on the local/regional/state and national levels to maintain currency in SBE issues and trends.

Additional Functions:
  • Performs other duties as requested or directed;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or their designee.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid, unencumbered MA RN license or attainable;
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification;
  • Education: Master's Degree in Nursing;
  • Required Experience: 3+ years experience in management of staff, space, and financial resources of a simulation/lab.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Doctorate in Nursing or related along with Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Preferred Experience: 5+ years experience in clinical simulation programs or educational modalities for undergraduate and graduate nursing education.

Salary Range:

$90,000 to $100,000 annually
