Overview
The College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS) currently has a full time opening for an Academic Advisor. This advisor will assist students with pre-registration, general education, major and minor requirements, articulation of transfer credits, and more. This advisor will also help students foster ownership of their education, seek engagement inside and outside the classroom, and transition to meaningful careers or graduate school. This advisor will work closely with the department heads, faculty, and staff in the academic departments their programs are within, and the CAAS Student Services office.

Responsibilities
  • The Academic Advisor will report to the Advising Supervisor.
  • Assist students in the process of developing an academic program.
  • Support students in the development of their educational goals, including the selection of a major, meeting graduation requirements, study abroad opportunities and exploring the possibility of graduate school.
  • Help students to understand the expected standards of achievement and likelihood of success in areas of study as well as providing them information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Provide students with correct up-to-date academic information about university graduation requirements.
  • Recommend students for a variety of awards and scholarships.
  • Provide students with resources and guidance to help them prepare for careers or graduate school.
  • Track students' academic progress and inform them of their status.
  • Work closely with the assigned department(s) and CAAS Student Services to recruit and retain high quality students.
  • Serve as a student advocate, providing excellent customer service.
  • Participate in recruitment and retention events hosted by CAAS.
  • Utilize tools that assist students in deciding on a major, for example, DegreeWorks and Career Design Center options.
  • Refer students to and maintain familiarity with available campus resources to meet individual needs.
  • Maintain and update student files.
  • Assist in other areas as needed.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an agricultural or applied sciences program
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and understanding of, or ability to learn, University IT systems including, Banner, DegreeWorks, Achieve, Outlook, Argos, and others.
  • Expertise in student development and academic planning.
  • Familiarity with major-specific advising and graduation requirements.
  • Creative problem-solving and multitasking abilities.
  • Effective interpersonal skills via various communication channels.
  • Knowledge of course schedules and curriculum.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Independence and self-supervision skills.
  • Knowledge of educational processes.
  • Actively seek ways to assist and serve.
