Job Details

The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining patients' blood specimens through venipuncture,
fingerstick or heelstick as appropriate for the performance of requested tests. The Phlebotomist uses
appropriate equipment and complies with phlebotomy policies and procedures, including proper
techniques, patient identification, biohazard precautions, and timing and fasting requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs phlebotomy and ensures accurate collection of requested tests from patient through venipuncture, fingerstick or heel stick.
  • Reviews all requisitions for missing information. Follows up with facility or provider if unable to obtain all information required for test performance.
  • Checks appropriate collection, sorting and storage areas in the facilities for specimens to ensure specimens are not missed and may transport/distribute these specimens to the laboratory as needed.
  • Monitors information in Collection List and Unreceived Specimen Report. Completes Collection List with accurate time of collection and phlebotomist code.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years' prior experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy training includes a minimum of 100 hours rotation within an inpatient hospital setting/physician office. (and usually 150 successful sticks)
