Department Marketing Statement:

Transportation & Parking Services (TPS) is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). TPS is an innovative and self-sustaining department that supports the UCSB mission by providing safe and reliable parking, fleet services and transportation alternatives to our campus community. TPS manages over 9,500 parking spaces and over 400 vehicles. TPS coordinates inbound and outbound traffic planning for all major campus events.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Enforces University parking regulations by issuing citations and courtesy warnings to vehicles illegally parked. Identifies vehicles to be "booted" and processes them according to California Vehicle Code. Keeps current on campus events and their locations. Directs traffic and escort vehicles including semi-trucks and buses. Informs supervisor of problems as they arise. Provides parking instructions and gives directions. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma. .
  • Demonstrated exceptional customer service by providing and delivering professional, helpful, high quality service and assistance. Ability to work as part of a team, maintain a positive attitude and work together to achieve a common goal of providing world class customer service. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with students, staff, faculty and the general public. Ability to maintain professionalism and composure under high customer demand and challenging customer interactions. Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of basic grammar for completing forms and reports and for communicating in a professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Understand, apply and explain parking rules and procedures.
  • Write clearly and concisely. Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Act in a courteous and effective manner when dealing with the general public and/or irate parking violators.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must wear prescribed uniform while on duty. Must be able to work occasional overtime. Ability to work outside year round in inclement weather using established foul weather gear provided by the department. Ability to stand and walk for most of each shift and walk an average of 6 to 8 miles daily over hilly terrain, around parked cars in both covered and uncovered parking facilities.
  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a satisfactory DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check
  • UCSB is a tobacco-free environment

Misconduct Disclosure Requirement:

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 55% Enforcement: Maintain current knowledge of all parking regulations. Patrol assigned parking areas, including metered areas, for violations of parking regulations. Enforce regulations through issuance of parking citations and courtesy warnings. Identify vehicles eligible to be "booted" and process them according to California Vehicle Code (CVC) requirements. Attach vehicle immobilizer devices and appropriate warning labels. Assist police department in towing of vehicles according to California Vehicle Code. Identify vehicles on the Lost and Stolen Permit Report and process them according to regulations. Perform other duties as required.
  • 25% General Duties: Assist with escorting large trucks throughout campus. Assistance includes blocking roads and/or parking lots to provide safe corridors for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicular traffic. Position directional and parking signage as assigned by supervisor. Assist in the collection of money from parking meters and transport it to appropriate locations. Assists Police Department in traffic control in emergency situations. Report safety hazards and the need for police assistance to the immediate supervisor. Attend meetings as needed to carry out functions of the position. Provide service for disabled vehicles through gas assists and battery jumps. Operate hand-held radio communication equipment according to FCC regulations. Maintain general campus and daily log knowledge for occasional kiosk coverage. Kiosk coverage. Greet the public in an expedient and efficient manner. Direct visitors to campus buildings and functions. Maintain knowledge of all campus buildings and their locations. Transport kiosk personnel as directed by supervisor to and from the Transportation & Parking Services Office. Perform other duties as required.
  • 15% Special Events: Work occasional shift change and additional hours for special events. Enforce parking regulations and traffic flow direction at special events that include athletic events, commencement, move-in day, concerts, etc. Locate directional and parking signage as necessary. Perform other duties as required.
  • 5% Permit Machines & Meters: Troubleshoot minor problems with permit machines and meters. Perform any necessary repairs. Report and clean any vandalism for machines as necessary. Perform other duties as required.
