Position Highlights |
The Data Solutions Analyst is part of the Data Solutions Team (DST) within Division Business Services (DBS) in the Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension (ALVSCE), which encompasses three colleges. This team strategically partners with Division leadership across key areas-financial, academic, personnel, and research planning-to support informed decision-making. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining reports for the division, using institutional data and outside data sources, often working independently and with little oversight. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Analyze and interpret data to uncover insights, identify patterns, and evaluate trends to support informed decision-making and process improvement, requiring a high degree of innovation and creativity.
- Design final tools, visualizations, and reports that effectively convey key insights to decision-makers.
- Ensure data integration, accuracy, precision, and completeness for complex, large data sets in all deliverables.
- Provide regular reporting for NIFA, NIH, Academic Program Review, NSF Grant Support, Budget Analysis, ABOR, Anaplan and All Funds, Faculty Review, Market Analysis, and Promotion and Tenure.
- Develop innovative, cross-platform tools to address existing challenges and enhance processes both technically and organizationally, supporting the Division's Instruction, Research, and Land Grant missions. Solutions include dashboards, web applications, and SaaS integration across a variety of tools, aimed at improving processes and operational efficiency.
- Engage ALVSCE employees at all levels to refine analysis and data-gathering processes for greater effectiveness and efficiency. This involves consolidating and enhancing efforts to be more streamlined, communicative, and grounded in the most effective qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Provide strategic guidance aligned with ALVSCE's goals in Instruction, Research, and Extension, supporting decision-making within the university's framework and policies.
- Manage data with sensitivity, maintaining discretion, confidentiality, and security safeguards.
- Communicate findings to a diverse audience of internal and external stakeholders, with various levels of data literacy.
- Work with colleagues in other colleges and units to share knowledge of and best practices with institutional data. Be aware of industry best practices.
- Maintain the Division/College MS SQL Server database, integrating data from various sources in collaboration with the IT team to ensure data security.
- Apply ETL and data warehouse modeling techniques for optimal data organization and structure.
- Develop automated processes for data retrieval, updates, and accuracy checks.
- Analyze and document processes to utilize the University's information warehouse and business intelligence tools via SQL and other methods.
- Integrate local data with institutional data (e.g., surveys, lookup tables) to support Division/department metrics, optimizing database infrastructure for flexible deliverables.
- Conduct predictive modeling and provide recommendations to help administrators assess relationships and explore "what-if" and forecast scenarios for strategic planning in finance, academics, personnel, and research.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Proficient in enterprise systems for managing personnel, student, financial, research, and organizational data.
- Skilled in producing customer-focused reports, analyses, models, and visualizations.
- Advanced expertise in software such as Excel, Oracle BI, SPSS, SAS, R, Python, STATA, Power BI, Qualtrics, PowerPoint, and Tableau and willing to work towards continuous improvement.
- Strong customer orientation with a commitment to creating customer-centric processes and solutions.
- Knowledgeable in SQL and database management, including query creation and database administration.
- Excellent communication skills, able to convey technical information to diverse audiences effectively.
- Possesses advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel, including sophisticated use of formulas, pivot tables, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), macros, and complex charting to design workbooks that support users in data-driven environments.
- Possess basic proficiency in common data science tools, such as SQL, Python, R, and SOQL, enabling seamless integration of data across platforms.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of policies and guidelines across domains (e.g., accounting, finance, human resources, and academics), with experience in higher education, especially within the University of Arizona context.
- Skilled in business process and workflow modeling, applying established principles to convey technical and organizational processes effectively.
- Possesses strong foundational knowledge in statistics, with experience in predictive and prescriptive analytics.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in a field that includes analytical, statistical, or technical components, such as the following fields: Management Information Systems, Business/Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Chemistry, or Cognitive Science.
- Eight years of relevant experience in business management, business analysis, systems analysis, financial analysis, Institutional Research, multivariate statistics, economics, database management, assessment, and/or applications development.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with database technologies, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, with expertise in developing SQL queries, scripts, and stored procedures.
- Experience with database administration tasks for Microsoft SQL Server, such as user creation, role assignment, schema design, and instance management.
- Experience with designing interactive reports using tools such as Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE), Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC), or Oracle Analytics Server (OAS). Applies advanced database methodologies and design standards and is knowledgeable in web development practices to enhance data accessibility and usability.
- Experienced in the end-to-end process of data analysis, from extraction and integration to advanced statistical analysis, enabling the creation of impactful visualizations and insights for diverse audiences. Has a thorough understanding of enterprise systems used at the University of Arizona, including UAccess Employee (Oracle PeopleSoft), UAccess Student (Oracle PeopleSoft), UAccess Financials (Kuali Financials and Oracle Financials Cloud), and UAccess Research (Kuali Coeus).
- Experience in using OBIEE, OAC, or OAS for dashboard creation and automated notifications, and experienced in extracting data from centralized data warehouses, such as the University of Arizona's EPM system.
