Basic Function
The Assistant/Associate Controller is a key financial leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing various critical accounting functions. This position ensures the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of financial reporting, including general ledger, financial statements, tax returns, and grant accounting. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of GAAP, a keen eye for detail, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Essential Job Functions
Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Oversee the preparation and analysis of annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and related compliance reports.
  • Stay current and implement new pronouncements of accounting standards and other regulatory issues affecting accounting procedures, financial reporting, and governmental funding.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide insightful commentary to management.
  • Prepare financial information for various annual reports such as IPEDS, NACUBO, and others as required.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses.


Grant Accounting:

  • Oversee the accounting for grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions.
  • Monitor grant expenditures and revenue recognition.
  • Work in collaboration with the Grants Office to ensure compliance, and timely and accurate grant reporting

Tax Compliance:

  • Prepare and file federal and state tax returns in a timely and accurate manner for Denison University and the Denison University Research Foundation (Forms 990 and 990-T, and various State tax returns).
  • Stay current on tax laws and regulations and identify potential tax issues and concerns.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors as needed.

General Ledger and Accounting Operations:

  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely posting of journal entries and other transactions.
  • Oversee the monthly and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations and balance sheet reviews.
  • Monitor and maintain the integrity of the chart of accounts.

Fixed Assets:

  • Manage the fixed asset lifecycle, including acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation.
  • Maintain accurate fixed asset records and ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Perform periodic fixed asset audits and reconciliations.

Internal Controls and Policy & Procedure:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of strong internal controls.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to the financial reporting process.
  • Assist in developing, writing and maintaining documentation of accounting policies and procedures.

Supervision:

  • Supervise and mentor the Accountant or Senior Accountant (once hired), providing guidance and support.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and monitor progress.

Special Projects:
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 years relevant accounting experience or audit experience with a public accounting firm
Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher Education experience
  • CPA
  • 1-3 years managerial or equivalent leadership experience
