Job Summary

Uses advanced professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Contacts are both internal and external to the department at all levels.

This is a senior level finance analyst position responsible for applying advanced knowledge, skills, abilities and experience to provide fiscal analysis for multiple levels of departmental business, including management of operating budgets, recharge operations, post-award activities, inter-campus grant-making activities and other activities as assigned. This position designs and develops analytical tools for use by program directors and other analysts, and applies technical knowledge and grasp of institutional policies to managing financial processes to yield effective results.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $109,300 - $163,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB), housed within the UCSF School of Medicine, has a vision to advance discoveries and insights into the distribution, determinants and outcomes of disease that will drive improvements in population health worldwide. The DEB has three missions: 1) education, 2) science, and 3) research. Its educational mission is to train students in epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for studying disease etiology and prevention, evaluating tests and treatments, and using evidence-based approaches in clinical practice and population health. The scientific mission of the DEB is to perform outstanding basic, clinical and population health research along a spectrum from molecules to society and to develop tools for the translation of knowledge that will improve clinical practice and population health and ensure optimal use of resources. The clinical mission of the Department is to support the practice of public health and preventive medicine in local, state, national and international health agencies.

Required Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 5+ years directly relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems, federal and state consting/contracting policies, and federal/state level information security policies.
  • Ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources and digest/record feedback to refine and streamline analyses.
  • Advanced ability to effectively present complex finance related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • In depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. In depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to identify urgencies and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function both independently and as a member of a team or multiple teams, ability to pivot and function dually as both a team leader and a team member in different contexts.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices pertaining to finance and technology and special programs, the intersections between operations and finance, and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Knowledge of the lifecycles of various types of projects with a demonstrated specialty in IT and technical project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently and accurately shift focus between summary- and detail-level information while keeping relevant strategic plans and priorities in mind.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated experience using UCSF business systems, including PeopleSoft/RAS, MyReports, CACTAS, UC Path, PLUS and Plus faculty portfolio, Advance, etc.
  • Demonstrated facility using technical tools that support advanced financial analysis, including Excel Power Query and Power Pivot, Advanced features of MS Excel, and manipulating data from REDCap and SQL database tables and Qualtrics surveys.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UCSF procurement and business contracting policies and procedures including risk assessment process for software and cloud computing procurements.
  • Advanced-level experience with academic and faculty compensation policies, practices and payroll structures in use at UCSF.
  • Demonstrated skill interfacing with different types of teams (contracting, finance, research, administrative, technical) and using common language to connect disparate teams
  • Demonstrated experience with change management as it impacts financial decisions
