About the Department and/or College

Facilities Maintenance at Texas Tech University ensures a high-quality environment for teaching and research by managing the maintenance and repair of educational buildings and essential infrastructure. Their mission focuses on maintaining spaces and systems in optimal condition through routine and scheduled upkeep to prevent failures. They also offer reimbursable services for non-educational functions and adapt their services to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and staff across various facility types, including offices, classrooms, laboratories, hallways, and restrooms.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Reviews new construction project plans and cost estimates. Establishes long and short range goals for assigned work center and provides guidance.
  • Regularly reviewing street light poles, organizing infrared inspections of electrical components at E&G facilities, and coordinating tests for tornado sirens.
  • Performs regular inspections of facilities and safety checks at designated work centers.this includes providing support to Engineering Services and Facility Planning and Construction in the design of projects.
  • Responsible for briefing department personnel on asbestos abatement projects, overseeing the annual budget for these initiatives, and planning and developing objectives for the asbestos abatement program as well as monitoring the proper removal of asbestos-contaminated materials by observing operations to ensure compliance and safety.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum ten (10) years' experience in the mechanical field or related maintenance fields. Minimum five (5) of the ten (10) years' experience in maintenance management of a technical field related to this position preferred.
  • Oversees and managing the Mechanical Operations work centers, which include the Electric, Insulation, and Plumbing shops. Responsibilities encompass operations, maintenance, renovations, and new construction. The position requires strong leadership, mature judgment, sound management skills, and personal integrity.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written andverbal, to deal with customers, shop personnel and other department personnel.
  • Must pass pulmonary function test and be certified to wear negative pressure respirator.
