Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine the Medical Physics Resident in the Radiation Oncology Department is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population. This a two-year temporary position in which the incumbent will service as Medical Physics Resident. The Department of Radiation Oncology supports an M.S./PhD. Graduate Medical Physics program that will provide didactic portion of the resident training. Responsibilities of the incumbent will include participation in all clinical activities, co-instruction of technology students and co-mentoring of Radiation Oncology residents in a research project. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties of a Medical Physics Resident in the Radiation Oncology Department may include the following but are not limited to:



  • Under supervision completes assigned QA tests for: 1) Linacs, OBI/CBCT, OSMS, Calypso, CT-Simulator, HDR and Stereotactic Radiosurgery System. 2) Ionization Chamber, Brachytherapy Dose Calibrator, diode system and other measuring equipment. 3) Eclipse and HDR treatment planning system. 4) IMRT QA using MapCheck and Portal Dosimetry.
  • Under supervision completes assigned external beam planning (conventional 2D/3D, gated or non-gated IMRT, SRS/SRT/SBRT) and brachytherapy planning (HDR and LDR) plans.
  • Duties include consulting with the Radiation Oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists and therapists regarding specific treatment goals.
  • Participates in weekly chart rounds. Assists with initial, weekly and final chart checking.
  • Under supervision performs and reviews Linac shielding design and Linac surveys as assigned. Also assists with Radiation Safety duties associated with radioactive Brachytherapy sources including hot lab survey, inventories, wipe tests, sources assays and patient monitoring.
  • Audits the established Medical Physics courses in Radiation Physics and Radiation Safety.
  • Teaching BME and Dosimetry students as assigned.
  • Reports filed in a timely fashion.
  • Completes Part 1 of the ABR at the end of the first year.



Qualifications

Required: Master's Degree with CAMPEP certificate in physics or closely related field.

Preferred: Doctoral Degree.

  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $55,000 - $58,000 Base

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:



  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($3400)
