Purchasing Supervisor

Job Purpose

Responsible for supervising buyers and support personnel and ensuring compliance to company policies and procedures. Coordinates the planning of short and long-term commodity objectives to provide effective use of company funds, to resolve procurement issues and to ensure cost competitiveness, timely delivery and quality of materials. Works with buyers to monitor and evaluate market conditions and trends in specific assigned commodities. Participates in strategic decisions to include make/buy and global procurement options based on anticipated demand.

Oversee the purchase of commodities, raw materials, equipment, components, machinery, and supplies necessary for operations

Monitor buyer ERP / MRP systems activities and SAP generated messages

Review and approve all purchases up to designated levels

Act as a direct liaison between purchasing, engineering, and manufacturing to maintain inventory to support demand

Develop and implement purchasing strategies that take advantage of economies of scale to maximize results

Negotiate contract and purchase order terms and conditions that will maximize value and minimize risk

Provide project support to new product development and sustaining engineering

Monitor the distribution and maintenance of assigned commodities for buyers

Work with buyers to contact potential vendors, review quotations, and evaluate purchase methods. Methods may include discrete orders, vendor managed programs or replenishment programs

Establish objectives for reducing cost and increasing service to end-users

Work with buyers and management to develop sources of supply, both domestic and off shore, where vendors and preferred suppliers are inadequate

Interact with engineering department to assist in the sourcing of materials, ensuring maximum benefit with respect to cost, quality and availability of material

Provide buyers with guidance for improving purchasing metrics to include inventory turns, vendor on time performance, vendor quality, MRB and purchase price variance

Serve as purchasing lead in the periodic review of standard costs for purchased parts

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6-8 years experience purchasing or purchasing with some combination of engineering, customer service or product management
  • 1 or moreyears supervisory experience
  • Experience with off-shore procurement - China and India preferred
  • Experience or education related to lean principles in an organization- kanban, theory of constraints, lean concepts and tools, and value stream mapping
  • Experience with supply chain logistic concepts
  • Knowledge of manufacturing practices, materials and their use
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment and prioritize work
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, co-workers, management, vendors and customers
  • Perceptive, analytical, with ability to induce cooperation in complex organizational relationships
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience in electronics, electrical, or mechanical manufacturing environment
  • Certification in APICS, CPIM (Production and Inventory Management), CSCP (Supply Chain Professional)

Background in performing a high level of material purchases in the international market
