Overview
Seasonal labor helps in efforts on the Kaysville Research Farm primarily in apple, peach, and cherry orchards. Emphasis on irrigation set up, repair, and maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Manage orchard irrigation system. Starting irrigation systems daily as designated by the weekly schedule. Check all sprinklers to make sure they are functioning. Make any repairs as needed.
  • Pruning trees in the spring to optimize sunlight and fruit quality.
  • Help maintain research orchards-- this may include removing root suckers, hoeing weeds, watering, summer pruning, etc.
  • Help in harvest efforts-- this includes hand thinning fruit in the early portion of the season, as well as harvesting mature fruit later in the season.
  • Help in data collection efforts-- this may include measuring growth of trees, recording harvest counts, weights, and quality measures, assessing effects of chemical treatments, etc.


Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will work 5 days per week for about 4 hours per day.
  • The weekly hours are a minimum and there may be an opportunity to work more hours during busy times of the season.
  • Must be 16 years.
  • Must have a valid drivers license to operate university vehicles.
  • Must be able to work productively without direct supervision.

Advertised Salary

This position requires moderate physical effort. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting up to 25 pounds, walking and standing. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment. Must be able to work outdoors in warm or otherwise inclement weather.
