The Vice President of Civil Engineering Design provides strategic leadership, technical direction, and operational oversight for the Civil Engineering Design department. This executive role is responsible for driving innovation, ensuring engineering excellence, building and retaining a high-performing team, and aligning design operations with the company's long-term business goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership
Set the vision and direction for the Civil Engineering Design department in alignment with company strategy.
Lead departmental planning, budgeting, and forecasting efforts.
Establish and maintain best practices, quality standards, and technical protocols.
Project Delivery Oversight
Oversee the execution of complex infrastructure, site development, and civil design projects.
Ensure on-time, on-budget, and technically sound delivery of civil design services.
Provide high-level QA/QC review and guidance on critical or high-risk projects.
Team Development & Management
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, project managers, and CAD/design professionals.
Champion a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.
Recruit top talent and build a diverse, high-performing team.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
Build strong relationships with key clients, partners, and public agencies.
Represent the firm in client meetings, project interviews, and industry events.
Support business development efforts with technical input and proposal leadership.
Innovation & Process Improvement
Promote adoption of emerging technologies (e.g., BIM, Civil 3D, GIS, digital twin tools).
Drive operational efficiency through process improvements and technology integration.
Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure compliance and competitiveness.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (Master's preferred).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
15+ years of progressive civil engineering experience, including 5+ in leadership roles.
Demonstrated success leading design teams and managing complex projects.
Deep knowledge of design standards, permitting, and agency coordination.
Strong business acumen, team leadership, and communication skills.

Experience in transportation, site development, utilities, and/or public infrastructure.
Familiarity with design-build or alternative delivery models.
Experience scaling teams in high-growth environments.

The incumbent in this position can typically expect to sit and use his/her hands to handle and feel for more than 1/3 of the day. He/she can expect to stand or walk for more than 2/3 of the day. Talking and listening are also expected for more than 2/3 of the day. The ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, or reach with arms will be needed for less than 2/3 of the day.
This position requires that the incumbent be able to lift items up to 70 pounds on an infrequent basis.
The incumbent in this position should have clear vision at 20 inches or less. He/she should be able to view various reports and forms as well as information displayed on a computer monitor and have the ability to distinguish between different colors. Depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to focus, and the ability to see from a distance are also necessary.
