What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Manager, R&D Science and Engineering to lead the Physical Security Engineering Department.

The focus of this role is to engage with the Nuclear Deterrence Mission to support Physical Security integration, Surety integration, and ND Production Automation support. This role will include engagement across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NNSA, DoD, DOE, and other Government Agencies) to identify and understand unfulfilled needs and to develop and deliver on funded programs to enable Sandia to address these mission needs. This role is highly visible in the Nuclear Security Enterprise level sponsors (SES, GO, O-6).

The Physical Security System Engineering Department is comprised of engineering staff and technicians that are engaged in DoD and DOE/NNSA nuclear security design and implementation efforts. Work scope includes policy/planning, technology development, design, testing, and implementation activities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Lead Fixed Site Physical Security activities driving the execution of initiatives that support Nuclear Deterrence Integration.

  • Assemble and coordinate multidisciplinary teams from across the laboratories to successfully execute projects.

  • Cultivate and maintain awareness of relevant technologies within the laboratories and the global industry, guiding new research directions based on mission requirements.

  • Establish and nurture partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support Weapons and Force Protection Program engagements related to the Nuclear Deterrence Mission and NNSA/DoD/DoE Physical Security Programs.

  • Collaborate with peer managers to stay informed about mission-related work, positioning funded development projects for successful transition to follow-on development and implementation funding.

  • Engage with staff to lead and enable Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects that advance Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Deterrence Production Automation initiatives.

    Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to meet with customers and foster relationships.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.



Salary Range:

$157,100 - $267,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, physics, or relevant STEM field, plus eight (8) or more years of directly related experience; OR Master's degree as stated above, plus four (4) or more years of directly related experience. Equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

  • Minimum experience in the following:

  • Five (5) years technical experience.

  • Two (2) years in project leadership, technical project management, program development and/or systems engineering.

  • Three (3) years technical experience in Nuclear Deterrence programs.

  • Active DOE Q-Level or DOD TS security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with peer managers to transition projects from program development and R&D concepts to successful program execution.

  • Demonstrated success in developing funded programs that make national security mission impact.

  • Demonstraed success in leading ND programs or PRTs.

  • Strong political acumen in business interactions, fostering productive relationships with customers.

  • Experience in planning and executing strategic goals and objectives.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling effective engagement with high-level stakeholders.

  • Skilled in developing and presenting proposals to both internal and external partners.

  • Adaptable in addressing shifting program priorities while navigating ambiguous customer direction/requirements.

  • Established a robust network across various organizations within the laboratories, facilitating external partners' access to comprehensive lab capabilities and critical support.

  • Practical knowledge and understanding of the DOE/NNSA and DoD budget and program management processes and policies (AOP, FYNSP, PRB, DOE O 413

  • Domain expertise in physical security delay design, sensor development/testing, network design, or other relevant physical security discipline.

  • Knowledge and understanding of DOE/NNSA (473.1A), and DoD (5210.41M) requirements as they pertain to physical security design/implementation projects.

  • Demonstrated commitment to recruiting, hiring, and mentoring new personnel, fostering their professional development.

  • Experience leading projects in a highly matrixed organizational structure, including operations at remote locations around the world.



About Our Team:

Department 6567's primary mission is to provide enhanced surety systems integration support to ND. These responsibilities include the development of testing, integration, and certification of components and systems necessary to advance DoD surety world-wide. A secondary function of Department 6517 includes supporting design, technology development, and installation of enhanced security components and systems for the USAF's Life-Cycle Management Center at Hanscom AFB.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
