Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist I (RT I) provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to patients of all age groups. Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies providing airway maintenance and manual and mechanical ventilatory support using a variety of devices and techniques. Administers therapeutic gases, inhaled aerosol medications and humidity therapy. Obtains, reviews, and interprets data and assesses the need for and response to respiratory care interventions and consults with medical and nursing personnel to optimize patient care planning. Performs arterial blood gas analysis and a variety of cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures. Provides patient and family instruction in respiratory therapy self-administration and proper use of equipment and supplies

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $59.63 - $74.64 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Performs procedures and treatments according to physician orders and Department Policies and Procedures.

* Participates in and supports Performance Improvement activities.

* Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning. Assists other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results.

* Performs advanced life support diagnostic procedures in the Critical Care Units such as measuring exhaled carbon dioxide, bronchoscopy assistance, indirect calorimetry, and other cardiopulmonary diagnostics. Assist medical staff in the interpretation and clinical application of results.

* Record respiratory care procedures performed in the patient's chart and maintain current charting on patients receiving therapy in the Respiratory Care Departments' files.

* Attends and participates in RCS departmental meetings, in-services and other communication and development activities.

* Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients, visitors, and staff. Is courteous, respectful, and professional to both internal and external customers.

* Demonstrates effectiveness in spoken and written communications. Communicates clearly to others. Documentation is clear, concise, and complete.

* Acts in accordance with the organization and department's mission statements.

* Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments. Responds appropriately in emergency situations. Prioritizes patient's needs based on emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, routine care.

* Responsible to be knowledgeable of and comply with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and the Medical Center. Is attentive to safety and infection control issues, especially when performing tasks. Identifies and reports unsafe conditions.

* Is courteous, respectful, and professional to both internal and external customers.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • * Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate and work effectively within intra and inter departmental teams.
  • * Promotes positive work relationships with peers, supervisors, and others. Is cooperative, receptive, and responsive to the needs of others.
  • * Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of respiratory care procedures

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience and demonstrated abilities in:

  • Critical or emergency care
  • Implementation and application of patient-driven protocols.

License/Certification

Valid and Current California Respiratory Care Board Respiratory Care Practitioner License.

  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) Certificate from NBRC.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (HCP) certification
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS)
