The D478 Engineers are responsible for supporting a wide variety of electrical systems across the following areas; instrumentation and control, auxiliaries, power distribution, and lighting systems. The D478 engineers are also responsible for development of internal cableways and cable routes for COLUMBIA class submarines, shock motion calculations, and component stress analysis. D478 Engineer's responsibilities include; computer based modeling, development/review of functional requirements documents, system descriptions, equipment procurement specifications, equipment qualification, drawing development, review of cable routing and support of 3D ship design.

Functional Areas and Descriptions

HM&E Interior Communication Systems: Interior communication systems include the design and development of flow meters, guided wave radars, liquid level switches, and control panels used within the various interior communication systems. Interior communication systems include but are not limited to fluids, air, entertainment, hull and ship handling, and diesel generator.
  • Lighting Systems: Auxiliary systems include the design and development of the motor controllers and control panels used within the various auxiliary systems. Auxiliary systems include but not limited to secondary propulsion system, air conditioning, trim and drain, reverse osmosis, shaft seal, ship service hydraulics, and galley and laundry systems.
  • Internal Cableway Systems: Columbia and UK cableway development includes verifying 3D model complies with cable loading, shock clearance, human factors and maintenance spacing, hanger stress analysis, cable routing, EMI separation, and facilitating construction.

Day to Day Operations

  • D478 engineers work closely with Design personnel and other engineering disciplines to develop cabling diagrams, wiring tables, schematic wiring diagrams, cable routing sheets, and assembly and detail drawings to support submarine construction.
  • D478 engineers work with electrical technicians and deck plate engineers to troubleshoot and develop resolutions to design build problems that may occur during submarine construction
  • D478 engineers support the development of logistical technical data to support ship's crew to operate and maintain the submarine after delivery of the submarine to the Navy
