The Position

A Power Plant Mechanic/Operator, operates, inspects services and maintains multi-fuel electrical generation and auxiliary equipment at East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) Power Generation Station (PGS) located at the main wastewater treatment plant.

Positions assigned to this class are distinguished by responsibility for the efficient operation and maintenance of multi-fuel electrical power generation and related PGS equipment during an assigned shift. PGS equipment operated and maintained includes but is not limited to the multi-fuel engine - generators, gas fired turbine engines, the digester gas collection storage delivery and flaring system, the heated hot water boiler and remotely cited standby generators. EBMUD's PGS includes large industrial stationary engines that run on multiple fuels and produce a total of 10 megawatts: a mix of 6-megawatt diesel and a 4.5-megawatt gas turbine. The power plant operates continuously, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Typical duties include:

*Operating and maintaining, multi-fuel, reciprocating engine-generators, gas fired turbine engine-generators, the

digester gas collection storage delivery and flaring system, the heated, hot water boiler, and remotely cited standby generators, switchgear, and other power plant equipment to generate electric power in accordance with verbal or written orders of the Power Plant Supervisor and standard operating procedures for plant operation and maintenance.

*Regulating electrical loads in accordance with standard instructions and coordinating transfer of power to the in-plant power distribution grid; adjusting engine and gas turbine loads, boiler and hot water loop temperature settings and flow, gas storage and usage levels.

*Monitoring automatic controls; may activate and operate manual controls to regulate all aspects of power plant operation; responding to audio and visual alarms and/or approaching emergency conditions in accordance with established procedures.

*Performing record-keeping functions such as logging power plant operations, fuel and other consumable used and inventories, test results, maintenance work performed, and unusual operating or maintenance conditions encountered; preparing special reports as required.

*Investigating and inspecting power plant equipment for conditions which may require repairs; reading work plans, drawings, system diagrams, and specifications; diagnosing reasons for equipment malfunctions and failures and reporting observed operating difficulties.

*Performing major maintenance and repair including but not limited to removal and reinstallation of remanufactured heads, fuel pumps, injectors, turbochargers, gas compressors and ancillary equipment/components; working with other staff and contractors as required; shutting down and starting up equipment as required for repairs or maintenance.

*Cleaning, lubricating, servicing, and performing scheduled routine preventative maintenance of power plant equipment and facilities.

*Directing, training and instructing other EBMUD personnel in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment.

*Reading and servicing meters, gauges, charts, and instruments and assuring their continuous operation.

*Operating overhead cranes, forklifts, chain hoists and rigs loads for lifting, moving, or maintaining equipment.

*Performing maintenance painting of plant machinery, equipment, piping, and structures; assisting in care of grounds adjacent to the work location, maintaining the power plant in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.

*Using common hand and power tools.

*Picking up, receiving, and monitoring inventory levels of essential supplies and consumables and assuring that they are properly stored.

*Accompanying authorized visitors through the plant and explaining its operation.

*Other duties, as assigned.

The salary range for Power Plant Mechanic/Operator is $9,910 per month increasing to $10,406, $10,926, and $11,472 after 12, 24 and 36 months, respectively. All off shifts receive 10% or 15% shift differentials.

Requirements

1.A high school diploma or its equivalent.

2.Two years of experience operating or maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment similar to that utilized in a diesel-driven power plant.

3.Valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Other requirements: Willingness to work weekends and various shifts, including graveyard. Willingness to work overtime on short notice. Willingness to work for long periods in an environment where noise levels are greater than 85 dB while wearing hearing protection devices and where temperatures reach over 100F.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a technical oral panel interview.

4.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

5.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

6.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
