A Brief Overview
Under the direction of the Lead Orthopedic technician and/or orthopedic physician, performs all duties related to the application and removal of casts. Assists with skeletal or skin traction placement and removal. Maintains orthopedic equipment. Participates in billing procedures.

What you will do

  • Casting:
  • Able to apply all types of casting materials (plaster/fiberglass) independently as patient care requires.
  • Safely removes all types of casts without patient injury.
  • Assists surgeon in application/removal of casts (when surgeon's presence is required) in either operating room (OR) or outpatient setting: Mehta cast, Hip and Shoulder spica cast, Petrie cast.
  • Maintain the cast room in a neat, clean, organized fashion.
  • Supplies:
  • Assists with maintenance of adequate supplies of slings, splints and casting materials in the cast room and in inpatient areas/OR where applicable.
  • Orders supplies weekly or as needed.
  • Maintain adequate daily inventory in the cast room, operating room, cast care and rehabilitation areas for traction supplies.
  • Work with lead technician and purchasing department to ensure high quality products in most cost-effective manner.
  • Participate in product trials as appropriate.
  • Billing:
  • Complete patient billing process as assigned for procedures performed in the cast room or operating room in appropriate electronic system.
  • Maintenance of equipment and traction:
  • Ensure presence and maintenance of cast saws and other cast removal equipment in patient care areas.
  • Set up and/or adjust traction per physician's order.
  • Assist with placement and removal of skeletal traction pins.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required

Experience Qualifications

  • Experience with casting - Preferred
  • Experience with maintenance of equipment - Preferred
  • Experience with inventory of supplies - Preferred
  • Experience with billing - Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs (Required proficiency)
