Job Description

The Director of Project Controls within the Engineering & Construction department plays a critical role as part of the leadership team, responsible for leading the implementation of project controls functions, reporting on project performance, and providing insight to the project teams based on predictive analytics and project level performance. Reporting directly to the EVP of Engineering & Construction, the Director of Project Controls will be responsible for a team of specialists and schedulers that provide support within the department and to other departments as needed, specifically Project Delivery and Development. The ideal candidate will have industry experience and a tenacity to be a strong leader with a growing company, and a passion for Renewable Energy.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee project scheduling, forecasting, and earned value management to ensure accurate and timely project delivery.
  • Track, analyze, and evaluate EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) vendor performance against contract obligations, both before and after contract award.
  • Lead risk management initiatives, including the identification, quantification, and mitigation of project risks, and facilitate scenario analysis to support decision-making.
  • Ensure the regular and accurate reporting of project progress, key performance indicators, and ad-hoc analysis to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, procurement, construction, finance, legal) to align project controls strategies with business objectives.
  • Manage and report on department budget and forecast including headcount and expenses.
  • Provide training and mentorship to project controls staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Support the integration of project controls best practices across the organization, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Present complex project controls data and insights to executive leadership and external stakeholders in a clear and actionable manner
Qualifications

To succeed as a Director of Project Controls at Apex Clean Energy, you'll need to excel within the following criteria:

  • Experience managing Project Controls for large construction projects (EPC, Vendor, Owner or IPP), with a focus on Renewable Energy Projects.
  • Project Controls training / certifications preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a Project Controls leadership function.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to relate to a corporate office environment as well as construction job sites.
  • The successful candidate will have a passion for Renewable Energy Projects, a strong leadership presence and caring attitude for people, and an ability to deliver results.
  • Proven expertise in project controls disciplines: scheduling (Primavera P6/MS Project), cost control, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and change management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and optimizing project controls systems and tools in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Familiarity with EPC contract structures and vendor performance management in the renewable energy sector
  • Job site visits on a quarterly basis or as needed to support the business
  • Position will be full time based at Apex Plaza in Charlottesville VA
    • Remote based will be considered for the right candidate, but will require at least 1 week per month at Apex Plaza or as needed

Additional Information

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit. The successful candidate will also travel to jobsites on a quarterly basis or as needed and should expect extended work hours while on site.
