POSITION SPECIFICS

We are searching for a highly experienced sustainment systems research and development engineer to join our Sustainment Information Systems Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. In this position, you will support and conduct applied research in applied sustainment systems and technologies used in defense applications.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Contribute to concept development and design analyses of engineering systems by independently evaluating, selecting, and applying engineering procedures and techniques to projects
  • Support sponsors in the definition of information system architectures and application of digital transformation principles and best practices
  • Collaborate with research and academic faculty at Penn State, as well as ARL team members of different skillsets/backgrounds to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas to improve organizational efficiency at group and department levels
  • Act as a subject matter expert in NAVSEA digital environments as applied to submarine sustainment
  • Prototype and demonstrate enterprise systems architectures in support of DoD business operations
  • Investigate, implement, and evaluate new technology solutions related to enterprise systems functionality
  • Document research activities and communicate findings and recommendations in technical reports, peer reviewed publications, and presentations to executive audiences
  • Provide innovative technical and problem-solving approaches for proposals and to enhance organizational capabilities; produce risk assessment and level of effort estimates
  • Write and submit proposals for funded research
  • Initiate and/or cultivate relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors; identify new research opportunities
  • Manage multiple and large projects; plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work of a major project
  • May mentor assigned staff in the development of technical, project, and business development skills

Required skills and experience areas include:

  • Active security clearance, at the Top Secret level or higher
  • Previous collaborations with senior defense executives and multiple stakeholders to define business requirements, evaluate solution paths, develop technical solutions, and deploy capability
  • Experience leading teams to drive digital transformation efforts for enterprise sustainment processes
  • Direct experience defining and deploying capability within NAVSEA cloud environments
  • Direct experience driving digital transformation for logistics and enterprise support of submarine platforms
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment while meeting project schedule requirements
  • Success in an office environment, where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • PhD in a related engineering or science degree

Your working location will be a hybrid on-site/work from home, with project-dependent ability for hybrid work. On-site is located in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $123,200.00 - $191,000.00.**THE PROPOSED SALARY RANGE MAY BE IMPACTED BY GEOGRAPHIC DIFFERENTIAL**
