Position Overview
The Center for Community Health and Development is seeking a Research Aide to serve as a Violence Prevention Specialist. The position will support youth and community violence prevention and evaluation efforts, including the Youth Violence Prevention Center - Kansas City to implement and evaluate the ThrYve Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (https://wethryve.org) . The KU CCHD also supports the evaluation of other prevention efforts, which may also be supported in this position.

We seek a professional with experience and interest in community violence prevention and evaluation. The position is funded through the Center for Community Health & Development at the University of Kansas (KU CCHD) (http://communityhealth.ku.edu). Job Description
The Prevention Specialist will support the development and implementation of prevention, intervention, and evaluation activities to support violence prevention services. The position will provide both individual and group-based services and support to assist in addressing risk factors of youth participants. The person will be employed by the University of Kansas (KU) but may be co-located or needed to work from the Kansas City and/or Lawrence office depending on the work. The KU CCHD provides a supportive working environment and the opportunity to work with a committed team and community partners. In addition, specific duties include:
  • 50% - Develop, implement, and/or evaluate prevention programs for youth in the Kansas City metro area. Assist with providing in- and out-of-school services and supports (e.g., after school prevention program) for the youth.
  • 20% - Support evaluation activities to gather information from participants and partners related to program effectiveness through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and review data and other information. Document consistently and accurately in written and computerized records all program and partner activities. Support review and reporting of documented information for evaluation of programs and initiatives. Assist with preparing timely reports and other evaluation activities.
  • 10% - Coordinate and broker resources, referrals and support for implementing and collecting data to examine the delivery of services to youth, including examining youth and family case plans to address health, academic, and personal goals. Provide plan support, navigation, and advocacy services in the school, home and community to support youth participants (ages 12-19) and their families.
  • 10% - Provide support for coalition activities and partners of violence prevention efforts, including the ThrYve Systems and Youth Advisory Board. Support violence prevention partner meetings and activities.
  • 10% - Assist in violence prevention efforts for the project and/or with other partners, and support other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
This position requires flexibility to work some evenings & weekends, a reliable car and a valid driver's license. Standard schedule may be between 9 am to 6 pm. The position will require the ability to work from Kansas City.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree plus at least one year of experience working with community groups, health agencies, and/or youth organizations. Or an associate degree plus three years of related professional experience or high school diploma plus five years of related professional experience working with community groups, health agencies, and/or youth organizations.
  2. Previous experience that required knowledge, understanding, and familiarity working with the AmeriCorps program to support the ThrYve approach to youth violence prevention as evidenced by prior experience and the application materials.
  3. Excellent written skills as evidenced by the application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. 1 year of experience that required working with community groups and/or populations in a community health setting, a youth-serving organization, or a community-based organization focused on serving area residents in an urban or metropolitan setting. as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Previous work experience that required the ability to work independently and as part of a team and work well with supervision, as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Previous experience and exposure to using computers and computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Team; Ability to learn new computer software and applications, as evidenced by application materials.
