About our group:

The Advanced Recording Subsystem organization is responsible for integrating heads, media, preamps, and channels into hard disk drives. This includes defining recording subsystem architecture, specifying electrical and magnetic component requirements, designing system features, validating and integrating these components and features into new HDD products, and ensuring successful product ramps.

About the role - you will:

  • Design channel-enabled architectures and component technology bundles that provide disruptive drive capacity, performance, and reliability gains.
  • For the current physical recording channel, identify channel detection technologies that harvest opportunities relative to the theoretical capacity entitlement.
  • Understand the future migration of the physical recording channel and develop novel channel detection, optimization, and adaptation techniques that exploit the changing characteristics.
  • Work with channel vendors to specify and evaluate new channel technologies.
  • Develop time-efficient physics-informed methods for tuning the channel in the factory process to accommodate the sources of variation in the HAMR recording system.
  • Provide guidance to head, media, and drive teams on how to use the R/W channel for design feedback and screening.
  • Work as a hands-on practitioner to perform bench testing with drive mules to demonstrate the feasibility of new channel-enabled system technologies.
  • Create and use channel models that can be used with synthesized or real waveforms to demonstrate the feasibility of new channel-enabled system technologies.
  • Contribute to Seagate's IP portfolio in the form of invention disclosures, patents, trade secrets, journal articles, and/or white papers.

  • HDD recording channels, including signal processing, information theory, modulation codes, error correction codes, equalization, and timing recovery.
  • Magnetic recording physics, including head, media, preamp, and channel interactions.
  • Drive bench testing and analysis.
  • Modeling of the recording system and/or channel blocks.
  • Signal and noise analysis techniques including PRBS sequences, Volterra series, di-pulse extraction and other advanced statistical methods.
  • Experience with leading cross-functional teams to solve high-impact high-visibility problems.
