Position Overview

The Director, Business Unit Financewill be a key strategic partner responsible for driving planning and reporting across all areas of the business unit P&L, with an added focus on insights into COGS, R&D and pipeline programs. This role is integral to enabling data-driven decision-making, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring alignment with the organization's long-term goals. Reporting to the VP, Finance, the role involves collaboration with senior leadership, operational teams, and external stakeholders.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

Strategic Financial Planning:

  • Lead financial planning and analysis activities for the full business unit P&L and will also own COGS, R&D and pipeline programs, ensuring alignment with corporate goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee the development and execution of annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and long-range plans.
  • Build and reviewdetailed financial (i.e. full-P&L, ROI, cost optimization) models for pipeline investments, new product development, and business unit performance.

Performance Analysis:

  • Monitor and analyze COGS and R&D expenditures, pipeline progress, and business unit financials, analyzing variances between actual and plan and identifying drivers of changes.
  • Identify KPIs for tracking performance across COGS improvement projects, R&D projects, pipeline milestones, and overall business unit outcomes.
  • Develop dashboards/visualizations and effectively communicate actionable insights to senior leadership to direct improvement of resource allocation and maximization of ROI.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Act as a financial advisor to business unit leaders, supporting decision-making and driving accountability for financial outcomes.
  • Partner with R&D, lab, operations, and strategy leaders to align financial plans with project timelines, resource needs, and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with commercial teams to assess the financial viability of new pipeline projects and market strategies.

Reporting & Compliance:

  • Prepare and deliver financial reports and presentations for leadership, board meetings, and external stakeholders - ensure critical items are highlighted to leadership and board members and act as a strategic advisor, solutioning for optimal business outcomes.
  • Support audits and regulatory filings as needed.

Process Improvement:

  • Enhance forecasting methodologies and financial systems to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Evaluate data requirements and drive the implementation of automation tools for financial analysis and reporting, leveraging ERP and business intelligence platforms for leaders to effectively and efficiently manage their business through self-service.
  • Integrate financial and operational datasets (with help of IT) to advance insight development
  • Identify and execute opportunities for cost savings and process optimization.

Leadership:

  • Lead and mentor a team of FP&A professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Provide guidance and training to team members to build expertise in business unit finance, COGS and R&D.
  • Drive the adoption of AI and other advanced tools and processes for financial planning and reporting.
  • Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to delegating tasks and responsibilities, assessing employee performance, and providing helpful feedback and training opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field (MBA or CPA preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in financial planning and analysis, with a strong focus on COGS, R&D, pipeline management, or business unit finance.
  • Proven track record in a leadership role within a fast-paced, innovation-driven industry (e.g., pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, technology).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Advanced expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and strategic planning.
  • Deep understanding of COGS and R&D cost structures, pipeline model development, and business unit economics.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate insights effectively.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Strategic thinker with a focus on driving results and organizational impact.
  • Highly detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proactive, collaborative, and adaptable to changing business needs.

Salary Range:

$174,000.00 - $277,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
