About our group:

The Advanced Recording Subsystem organization is responsible for integrating heads, media, preamps, and channels into hard disk drives. This includes defining recording subsystem architecture, specifying electrical and magnetic component requirements, designing system features, validating and integrating these components and features into new HDD products, and ensuring successful product ramps.

About the role - you will:

  • Use principles and techniques from information theory, error correction coding, and signal processing to advance the design of R/W channels for future HDD products.
  • Work with channel vendors to specify and evaluate new channel technologies.
  • Understand the top challenges of today's HAMR recording channel and identify opportunities for channel-enabled capacity, performance, reliability, and/or manufacturing time improvements.
  • Identify new channel technology opportunities specifically in the context of current and future host workloads, buffer characteristics, and firmware-driven data flows.
  • Serve as a channel subject matter expert in cross-functional technology development teams.
  • Demonstrate and validate new technologies in the drive on the bench.
  • Create and use channel models to explore the entitlement and feasibility of new concepts.
  • Contribute to Seagate's IP portfolio in the form of invention disclosures, patents, trade secrets, journal articles, and/or white papers.

About you:

Your experience includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, or a related field and 5+ years of experience; or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, or a related field and 3+ years of experience; or a PhD and 0+ years of experience; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Communications channel expertise, including signal processing, information theory, modulation codes, error correction codes, equalization, and timing recovery.
  • Queuing theory and/or AI expertise a plus.
  • Magnetic recording knowledge a plus (recording physics including head, media, preamp, and channel interactions).
  • Lab data acquisition and analysis instruments such as oscilloscopes, digitizers, GPUs, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Experience in programming languages (Cuda, C++, Fortran, Python).
  • Demonstrated team leadership and organization skills.



The estimated base salary range for this position is $92,310.40 - $131,994.72. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

This role can be based in Shakopee, MN; Longmont, CO; or Fremont, CA - we're open to candidates in any of these locations.
