Job Summary

A staff research associate (SRA) position is available with Dr. Pavithra Viswanath at the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. The focus of the laboratory is to leverage an understanding of brain tumor metabolism for the identification of novel metabolic vulnerabilities for therapy and imaging.

Under direct supervision and guidance from the supervisor, the successful candidate will perform in vitro and in vivo experiments designed to delineate metabolic alterations in preclinical brain tumor models. Experimental techniques include cell culture, western blotting, flow cytometry, intracranial implantation, small animal surgery, survival studies, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, magnetic resonance imaging, and metabolic imaging.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute experimentally and intellectually to the development of our metabolomics initiative and to participate in collaborative projects in a premier research setting.

Note: This is a limited position that will end 18 months after the start date.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.


The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Radiology Imaging IT team architects, implements, and manages the computer systems and networks needed to support more than 700,000 imaging studies annually. Our team manages the full stack from network to application and end user support. The team provide Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm support including evening and weekend call to support the Medical Center needs.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in a biomedical research laboratory environment.
  • Prior experience with cell culture.
  • Prior experience in animal research (both mice and rats)
  • Ability to work with a diverse team of researchers, scientists, and students
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative
  • Demonstrated record of reliability and excellent attendance

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with mass spectrometry is a plus
  • Experience with magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a plus
  • Experience in MALDI imaging will be considered a strong plus
