The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

The research assistant (RA) will be responsible for implementing and evaluating software related to using large language models (LLMs) to identify and extract information regarding material structure, composition, properties and characterization from XML and PDF research articles, as part of a team of faculty and PhD students.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Software implementation and evaluation as well as clear and regular communication about progress both to the team and the greater research community, through written communication, in-person meetings, written reports, and presentations as needed and appropriate
  • Conducting research in NLP and social intelligence of agents, ethics of AI and positive applications of AI (culture, mental health)
  • Implementing and evaluating research ideas related to LLM data extraction from research articles in Python
  • Communicating research problems and solutions clearly, in weekly meetings, presentations, written reports and research articles, as appropriate
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related field by the time of employment
  • 1-3 years' experience in computer science or AI
  • Programming and background in materials science research, machine learning experience preferred
  • A combination of education and meaningful experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered
