Job Description Summary

The Fire and Life Safety Technician is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and ensuring the proper operation of building fire protection and life safety systems. This role involves conducting regular inspections, performing maintenance, and responding to emergencies to ensure compliance with fire codes, ordinances, and safety standards.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect and test fire protection and detection systems to verify proper installation and compliance with laws, codes, and standards.

  • Troubleshoot and arrange repair or replace defective fire/safety equipment and elevators.

  • Conduct inspections of buildings for compliance with life safety and fire safety standards.

  • Respond to emergencies in mechanical, electrical, and structural systems to assess fire/safety threats.

  • Maintain and inspect fire extinguishers, alarm systems, and sprinklers.

  • Disable and re-enable fire panels as directed.

  • Coordinate with contractors and review their work to ensure compliance with requirements and applicable codes.

  • Assist in the development of emergency preparedness procedures and ongoing training requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports of inspections and maintenance activities.

  • Additional duties as assigned by the manager.

Other Functions

  • This position may be designated as essential personnel to support business continuity during campus emergencies, disasters, or other special needs as directed by management. Essential personnel are subject to recall inside/outside their normal schedule. Additional details can be found in the Wake Forest University Policy on Weather and Other Unusual Conditions.

  • Subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters or other special needs as directed by management.

  • Provide excellent service to internal and external department customers.

  • Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate Supervisor and to the Safety Director if necessary.

  • Follows all University and departmental policies and procedures.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school or equivalent plus 3-5 years of experience in fire safety systems across higher education and institutional. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in fire prevention, fire safety inspection, life safety, or a related field.

  • A valid driver's license is required.

  • Must be able to meet the needs of the University's automobile insurance policy.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local fire and life safety regulations and codes (e.g., NFPA, OSHA).

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication skills for conducting training sessions and interacting with University staff and emergency services.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience working in a University or large institutional setting is preferred.

  • Certification in fire and life safety, such as Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or similar, is preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must be able to conduct building inspections, including climbing ladders, accessing rooftops, and inspecting confined spaces.

  • Close visual acuity, such as operations of machines, using measurement devices, and/or visual inspections of small parts or devices.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Ability to work in both office and field settings.

  • May be required to work evenings and weekends, or be on-call for emergencies.
