POSITION SPECIFICS

The Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (OPAIR) at Penn State is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Business Intelligence Specialist to join its Data Modeling team. This role is an exciting opportunity for someone eager to collaborate directly with end-users to help build a robust data infrastructure that turns institutional data into actionable insights for decision-makers across the University. This position plays a key role in the development of Penn State's analytical data ecosystem and is critical in supporting the Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) platform. It also contributes to the design and implementation of systems and processes that expand access to OPAIR-curated data across the University.

The Data Modeling team specializes in data and metadata modeling, and provides support for the Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) platform. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining strategic reports in OAC and Power BI. Additionally, the team actively contributes to the creation and validation of new data models, subject areas, and reports to address the evolving needs of the institution.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in defining and implementing processes to expand access to OPAIR-curated data

  • Collaborate with university data stewards and end users to assess their needs and develop appropriate data and reporting solutions

  • Contribute to the development and validation of new data models, subject areas, data fields, and reports

  • Validate data and reports, and assist with user acceptance testing

  • Act as a resource for colleagues, sharing expertise in system deployment, data security, data analysis, data modeling, and reporting

  • Provide ongoing support for analytical tools (OAC, Power BI), as well as data and reports maintained by OPAIR

  • Offer end-user support by resolving access requests, answering inquiries, and assisting with troubleshooting

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in OAC and Power BI

  • Proven ability to communicate data insights effectively to non-technical audiences through data visualization techniques

  • Experience developing data models and designing dashboards for enterprise reporting applications such as OAC, Power BI, OBIEE, Tableau, or similar platforms, with a focus on data storytelling and visualization

  • Advanced knowledge of data modeling principles, practices, and procedures, including the development of multidimensional data models

  • Strong understanding of data architecture principles, including data quality, master data management, data lineage, metadata management, and data governance

  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications

  • Proficiency in T-SQL, PL/SQL, Power Query M, and DAX

  • Experience testing and validating data used in reports or other analyses

  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team, with strong interpersonal and communication skills to support cross-functional collaboration

  • Ability to work independently

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to individuals with varying levels of technical expertise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • R, Python, or other programming languages

  • Experience with using or creating automated test scripts

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $76,700.00 - $115,100.00.
