Essential Job Functions
The Appalachian Police Department supports the University community through the maintenance of a peaceful and orderly community and the provision of needed general and emergency services. The accomplishment of this purpose is through constant attention to the areas of public safety, event security, law enforcement, crime prevention, personal safety awareness programs and service assistance to various departments and offices of the University. This department is committed to provide law enforcement services, enforcement of University rules, regulations and policies as well as state laws to ensure that the peace and order of the University community is maintained at all times.

Reporting to the Administrative Captain, the Public Safety Telecommunicator Supervisor will manage the department's dispatch center.

Areas of responsibility and duties will include:

  • Supervision: including counseling, coaching, training, and evaluating subordinates' accomplishments
  • Overseeing staffing, planning, and updating of the assigned work area
  • Providing logistical support to the entire police department, minor IT issues with dispatch and officer equipment and police software
  • Providing support and logistical assistance during large events and emergency situations
  • Assisting with the logistics and support of the mobile command center bus
  • Understanding, and enforcing departmental policies and procedures
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Administrative Captain or the Chief of Police

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Knowledge of police Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Be able to complete all SBI/Division of Criminal Information (DCI) functions to include hit confirmations, entering persons or items, clearing persons or items, criminal history inquiries, checking driver and license plate information, including out of state inquiries.
  • Be able to operate emergency multi-frequency radio consoles and telephone lines, along with providing suggestions and expertise for upgrading equipment in the dispatch center.
  • Ability to assist with minor IT issues for installing police programs/software on dispatch and officer computers.
  • Ability to assist with maintaining communication technology on the mobile command center bus.
  • Understanding of providing logistics during large events or emergency situations.
  • Ability to act and direct the action of dispatchers in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to build relationships and solve problems
  • Outstanding organizational, and scheduling skills for the dispatch center to ensure proper coverage.
  • Ability to act as the department TAC (Terminal Agency Coordinator) for the NC State Bureau of Investigation's Division of Criminal Information Services.
  • Experience in supervision of a police/emergency dispatch center.

Work Schedule/Hours
40 hours per week. The position will supervise dayshift and nightshift dispatchers and may fluctuate depending on the needs of the organization and coverage for the dispatch center.
May require occasional fill-in during unexpected dispatcher absence, with some weekend and evening work for special events or emergency situations.

Knowledge of appropriate policies and procedures for recruiting, selecting, developing, counseling, disciplining, and evaluating the performance of employees.
