Position Overview


Primary Purpose of the Position

  • The Adjunct Faculty member will be responsible for teaching one or more sections of FYE 1350: Foundations for RAM Success.
  • This course is designed to support students' transition to college life at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) by fostering the development of essential academic, personal, and professional skills.
  • The instructor will create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that empowers students to succeed in their academic pursuits and beyond.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The First Year Experience ( FYE) Program's primary function is to assist all new students by helping them to successfully transition into the university both academically and socially.

Minimum Experience/Education
Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in [Education, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education, or related discipline].
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching or facilitating student development programs.
  • Strong commitment to student success and a passion for working with first-year college students.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Proficiency in using technology for teaching and learning (e.g., learning management systems, presentation software).

  • Preferred Qualifications:


    • Experience teaching first-year experience courses.
    • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices.
    • Familiarity with WSSU's resources and community.
    • Experience working with diverse student populations.




Normal Work Schedule
Monday-Friday 8 AM - 5 PM with weekly office hours

Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned section(s) of FYE 1350, adhering to the established curriculum and course objectives.
  • Develop and deliver engaging and interactive lessons that address the course learning outcomes, including:

    • Academic tools, strategies, and problem-solving techniques.
    • Goal setting and action planning for academic, personal, and professional growth.
    • Knowledge of WSSU history, traditions, and cultural context.
    • Exploration of academic and professional opportunities.
    • Strategies for health and wellness, financial literacy, and self-advocacy.



  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, including lectures, discussions, group activities, and the integration of technology.
  • Assess student learning through assignments, projects, presentations, and other appropriate methods.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students on their performance.
  • Maintain regular office hours (virtual or in-person) to provide student support and guidance.
  • Collaborate with other FYE instructors and staff to ensure consistency and effectiveness of the program.
  • Attend required faculty meetings and professional development workshops.
  • Adhere to university policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and grades.

Utilize the university's learning management system (e.g., Canvas) for course management.
