JOB SUMMARY

The Laboratory Manager within the Insulating Materials Laboratory (various locations) is responsible for the day-to-day operations in the laboratory. This person will be representing the policies, ethics, and culture of the company in a leadership role, while supervising and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in performing tests required for quality control and routine analysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Ensures all lab staff have adequate resources to perform all aspects of work required.


  • Ensures all lab staff are adequately trained to safely perform all required job functions and that competency records are maintained.
  • Ensures compliance with all corporate policy procedures in the laboratory.
  • Provides employee motivation and foster good working relationships in the laboratory environment
  • Oversees calibrations, quality assurance control, training, round robins with the goals of continuous improvement
  • Maintains an "open door policy" and communicates with lab staff and management to promote empowerment and accountability.
  • Understands customer requirements and organizes lab procedures, schedules and staffing to provide for meeting/exceeding same and to control cost.
  • Fosters customer confidence in Doble's laboratory work.
  • Supports the ISO certificate(s) and manages corrective/preventive actions.
  • Reviews laboratory operations for all aspects of the continuous improvement process.
  • Compiles and analyzes (or through a designee) test information to determine operating efficiency of processes and equipment and to diagnose problems and malfunctions.
  • Recommends measures to improve testing procedures, use of equipment, and needs for new equipment.
  • Conducts, aids in conducting or directing research to develop custom procedures as needed, working in conjunction with senior lab management.
  • Handles required disciplinary matters in a fair and consistent manner and maintains open communication with the HR & Service Management.
  • Represents Doble by appearance and conduct. Behaves ethically at all times. Ensures compliance in all areas.
  • May on occasion be required to perform the duties of the Chemists and/or Lab Technicians.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by senior management.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:



  • Four-year college or university degree with major course work in Sciences, Physics and Chemistry; OR a combination of experience, education, and training equivalent to a four-year degree in Chemistry, Physics and Sciences


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:



  • 5 years of experience in a materials lab environment
  • 2 years of experience in a management capacity
  • Expertise in gas chromatography and working knowledge of HPLC
  • Some form of petroleum testing is a plus
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and customers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Computer literate (MS Office), equipment related software, email etc.
  • Domestic and international travel may be required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, taste and smell. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands with arms. The employee must sometimes lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must use assistance when lifting 50 or more pounds. Employee is sometimes required to climb and descend stairways and ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job related skills, as well as relevant education or training experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the related duties, the employee regularly works near flammable material, hazardous materials, near moving mechanical parts, and sealed low level radiation sources; and can be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
