Job Purpose

Required by the Massachusetts legislature, Electric Sector Modernization Plans (ESMPs) are strategic roadmaps to modernize and upgrade the electric grid to enable an affordable, equitable clean energy transition, whilst ensuring the grid can handle increased demand from electrification and the deployment of renewable energy sources. The lead engineer will provide technical expertise and support from an engineering perspective to ensure effective National Grid operations. This can encompass a range of duties including coordination studies, fault studies, relay settings, protection reviews and repair, safety implementation and monitoring and participation in small- and large-scale engineering projects.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support implementation and delivery of the Electric Sector Modernization Plan and Capital Work Plan. Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Provide protection design and develop protection schemes for National Grid's distribution and transmission substation equipment's and transmission lines.
    • Perform relay protection coordination studies, design & review AC/DC schematics, develop & issue relay settings for transmission lines, transformers, capacitive banks, feeders, etc.
    • Independently collate and analyze data using ASPEN, symmetrical components, and manufacturer equipment software to support ESMP projects.
  • Support development of protection standards for National Grid systems.
  • Provide technical support of protection & control systems for all voltage levels of National Grid's transmission and distribution system.
  • Provide technical assistance to the field on matters relating to design, operation and maintenance of protection and control equipment.
  • Perform arc flash study for National Grid substations and improve relay settings to reduce arc flash energy level while maintaining the proper protection and coordination while working with other project team to formulate long term P & C system upgrade strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers within the team.
  • Manage and perform work activities in a self-sufficient manner without frequent guidance and oversight.
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
  • Able to motivate, counsel, coach, and develop direct reports and others.
  • Experience establishing clearly defined goals and standards of employee performance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • 8 years of work experience in Protection Engineering or related fields.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) and leadership qualities.
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy to facilitate travel, as required, across US service territory.

Salary: $150,000 - $176,000
