Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service. Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance. Reporting to the Director, Signal Engineering, under guidance in the most complex assignments, performs senior-level professional engineering duties in the design and analysis of complex large scale signaling and crossing systems installations, serves as a resource and subject matter expert; and leads teams or projects. The Primary Duties include: Create designs including technical drawings, calculations, parts lists, and cost estimates for complex intricate systems in accordance with standard operating procedures, quality measures, and codes and regulations. Investigate malfunctions on systems and equipment, identify the root cause of problems, and develop solutions to resolve failures and performance issues. Function as a subject-matter-expert to field personnel and signal engineers providing guidance on complex and intricate circuit designs. Research manufacturer parts and materials and conduct technical evaluations to determine if products meet Metra's quality standards and are compatible with existing equipment. Prepare scope of services and detailed specifications for large scale complex signal systems contracts; review consultant submittals including designs, materials, and budgets for cost efficiencies and compliance with contract specification and quality standards; and approve, provide guidance in making revisions, and/or negotiate changes. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
