Job Summary

This position is to serve as the Department of Surgery's pre-award and post-award contracts and grants finance analyst. The incumbent will be responsible for providing pre-award contract and grant administration, financial analysis, and daily business operations. Account management includes; analyzing expenditures charged to the project accounts, ensuring consistency and compliance with federal, NIH, DOD, CIRM, and other federal, state, university-wide and sponsoring agency policies, and following generally accepted accounting principles. Incumbent must use project management skills to develop goals and completion timetables, establish financial procedures, prioritize tasks, and communicate with others.

The scope of duties will also include purchasing of research supplies, materials, equipment, and travel coordination. This position will be responsible for preparing and submitting grant applications and managing grant cost recovery entries and payroll management for all individuals on grant funding. This includes the analysis of policy, proactive funding change adjustments, and accountability to ensure the Principal Investigator are fully supported in their research efforts. Ensures compliance with departmental, UC Davis, and federal policies related to research funding. This position will prepare financial reports for the PI to review budgets and expenditures.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience performing analytical work, analyzing complex information, performing independent research, presenting complex data in a way that facilitates decision-making and making strategic recommendations.
  • Experience preparing financial reports, developing financial projections (long and short term), and tracking expenses.
  • Demonstrated experience at exercising administrative judgment and assuming responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within functional area.
  • Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and University accounting policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of financial and payroll systems (including Aggie Enterprise and UC Path), or similarly complex administrative systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and/or private grant administration, analysis, and financial reporting policies.
  • Advanced spreadsheet, word-processing, database, presentation, and e-mail software skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), and ability to design user friendly financial reports.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to establish goals, prioritize and coordinate multiple work assignments and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to present and communicate technical and non-technical information clearly, concisely, and effectively to a variety groups of individuals.
  • Ability to complete tasks accurately, neatly, and quickly under pressure of deadlines and other duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience managing a portfolio of external grants and contracts.
  • Experience with contracts and grants financial systems such as Cayuse and Aggie Enterprise. Prior experience with UC Davis financial systems preferred.
  • Experience working directly with faculty and the ability to maintain respect and confidentiality.
  • Skill to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and to set priorities to effect project completion within stated deadlines.

The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The Department's extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.
