Overview

COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Engineering has an opening for an engineer to support design, test, shipboard integration, analysis, and system testing of the COLUMBIA Class Medium Voltage Medium Frequency (MVMF) Switchboard. The D489 MVMF Switchboard team responsibilities include MVMF Switchboard design development/redesign efforts, qualification testing, and analysis for all systems within the component including power electronics, electromagnetics, protective relay interaction, etc. Additionally, the team has a strong focus on driving the supplier deliverables, test procedures, test reports, and design to meet all applicable requirements without deviation while identifying deficiencies in the specification to apply lessons learned to future electric propulsion plant submarine applications. Engineers in the group will assist in MVMF Switchboard construction support and shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities and test support at the IPS Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA.

Responsibilities: The engineer hired for this position will be expected to:

      Coordinate supplier MVMF Switchboard design and redesign efforts
    • Verify protective relay design compliance with specifications and system requirements
    • Support testing and troubleshooting for the MVMF Switchboards at the IPS CTF and supplier facility
    • Support lifecycle management activities such as spares procurement
    • Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, and vendors
    • Interface with Operations and Trades at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities
    • Enforce technical requirements on vendors


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BS or MS engineering degree (Electrical, Systems, Mechatronics, etc.)
  • 0 - 3 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience using Microsoft products
  • Ability to occasionally travel to remote facilities within the United States (Philadelphia, PA; Milwaukee, WI; Washington, D.C., etc.)

Preferred:

  • Experience working with government customers
  • Multi-disciplinary systems engineering experience in complex systems based products
  • Experience with MIL Standards
  • Experience in control systems, power electronics, protective relay programming
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Simulink
