Essential Job Duties
The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies ( NCICS) in Asheville, NC is currently seeking a Temporary Research and Development Associate to work remotely with Institute and NOAA NCEI scientists on current projects. The associate will support various project-related tasks, including, but not limited to: data inventory development, scientific study coordination, data search and acquisition, statistical analysis, data formatting and calibration, mathematical model formulation, pipeline development, and machine learning.
The Associate(s) will be expected to utilize their education and background to:

  • Complete a variety of scientific programming, development, or research-related tasks under the guidance of Institute scientists;
  • Effectively utilize programming and/or software engineering skills while interacting with environmental information;
  • Demonstrate strong technical aptitude and the ability to research and solve complex issues independently;
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn and apply new skills as needed;
  • Effectively communicate challenges, approaches, and resolutions to all levels of the organization as requested or needed;
  • Maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Minimum Experience/Education
Recent completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree in statistics, environmental science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, meteorology, atmospheric science, public health, or related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Familiarity with software engineering concepts, and the ability to apply those concepts to environmental information.
  • Experience with machine learning development and natural language processing (NLP).
  • Experience developing scientific applications.
  • Experience with environmental data research and analysis.
  • Experience working in cloud computing and/or high performance computing environments.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity such as journal publications.
