The Department of Anesthesiology at Mass General Brigham is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to conduct basic research in studying the biology of postoperative delirium and related cognitive dysfunction. The position focuses on applying molecular approaches, including proteomics, transcriptomics, and DNA sequencing, to explore the underlying mechanisms of neuronal injury and immune-neural interactions. The fellow will be responsible for designing and conducting bench experiments using neuronal cell culture models and molecular biology techniques. Experimental methods may include qPCR, RNA sequencing, Simoa assays, laser confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and related tools. In addition to laboratory work, the fellow will analyze and present data, contribute to the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications, and coordinate research activities with collaborators. Strong organizational skills, close attention to detail, and clear communication are essential. The ideal candidate should be capable of working independently while also contributing effectively to a team-based research environment.

With supervision and guidance, responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will include:

  • Performs independent and highly specialized experimental procedures
  • Designs and implements modifications of research protocols
  • Troubleshooting problems and instructing colleagues in highly specialized techniques
  • Synthesizes and interprets results
  • Performs advanced data recording and analysis using various software programs and statistical techniques
  • Maintaining organized and detailed records of laboratory experiments in electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Presentation of results at lab meetings and national conferences
  • Preparation and submission of research manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
  • Assisting with preparation of grant applications
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

PhD or MD required in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Prior lab experience required. Must have evidence of strong scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications. Open to highly motivated candidates with a relevant background. Secondary appointment will be at Harvard Medical School.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Assistance guiding research technicians and trainees in the lab is expected.

Work will be performed in a fast-paced research laboratory environment, requiring teamwork, collaboration, and flexibility. Must be able to work independently.
