Primary Purpose of Position
The developing Physician Assistant (PA) Program at North Carolina A&T State University is seeking (3) Part-Time Instructors to teach, research, advise, and perform other responsibilities as delegated by the Program Director in the Physician Assistant program. This is a temporary position that reports to the Program Director.
The primary purpose of this role is to provide student-centered teaching and clinical instruction of master's-level Physician Assistant (PA) students. Part Time faculty in this role will provide student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development, engage in program assessment accreditation-related procedures. The ideal candidate will be expected to (i) incorporate modern pedagogical skills in curriculum development, instruction, and/or course coordination in the didactic and/or clinical phase of the program; (ii) it is expected that the faculty member will be effective in the areas of course design, course delivery, and evaluation (iii) supervise and support physician assistant students in independent research projects.
Essential functions of the Principal Faculty include but are not limited to:

  • Support the didactic and clinical year curriculum.
  • Support didactic and clinical year assessment tools and facilitate data-driven curricular change.
  • Support student learning activities in attaining the program's academic competency standards.
  • Coordinate assessment and evaluation processes and ensure feedback and action plans are communicated in a timely manner.
  • Support orientation of students, and aid in maintaining policies and procedures related to the pre-clinical/clinical year.
  • Maintain records regarding student performance, attainment of program competencies, and evaluations associated with academic performance.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the following applications: Office (excel, word, PowerPoint), Redcap, Basecamp, Box, Exam Soft, Exxat.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the ARC-PA standards and ensure their compliance with the curriculum.
  • Participate in the admissions process (file review, interviewing, student selection)
  • Attend monthly Faculty Meetings.
  • Attend monthly Curriculum Meetings .
  • Attend and participate in the annual program retreat.
  • Attend and participate in all program events including Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Graduation, and alumni events.
  • Work closely with the program director to ensure the accuracy of program reporting and perform any other duties and responsibilities as delegated and defined by the PA Program Director.
  • Model professional and ethical behavior.


Additional Responsibilities :

  • Develop curriculum, provide instruction, develop assessments, revise curricula and engage in plans for student enrichment activities and remediation.
  • Develop syllabi for assigned program courses.
  • Manage Learning Management System course shell.
  • Facilitation of small group in team taught courses.
  • Coordination of instruction.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
  • Remain abreast of developments in the field by reading current body of literature, engaging with colleagues, and participating in professional organizations on the local, regional and/or national level stage.
  • Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge and publish findings in professional peer reviewed journals, books, or electronic media and secure grant funding.
  • Collaborate with members of the healthcare community to improve programs, to develop new programs, and to provide students with access to learning opportunities.

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences ( HCHHS) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the Master's in Physician Assistant Studies ( MSPA), Master of Social Work ( MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and Ph.D. in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs are being developed; Doctor of Nurse Practice ( DNP), PhD in Applied Psychology, and PhD in Sociology. The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.
The Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a quickly growing department, and this position will play a role in preparing for accreditation and admissions and facilitating growth and development. The North Carolina A&T Physician Assistant program will help to increase accessibility to medical services for the state's growing population while providing affordable healthcare. The program's faculty will successfully prepare students to become competent Physician Assistants, contributing quality care to the workforce through the delivery of foundational knowledge and essential clinical skills. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to the discipline of medicine and encourage interdisciplinary learning and team-based care.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree (Doctorate preferred).
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written).
  • High degree of organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make distinctions among competitive applicants.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Evidence of program planning and management skills.
  • 2+ years of clinical experience.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • A PhD., EdD., DHSc, or professional doctorate in a related field with a demonstrated record of research.
  • Ability to establish and sustain a strong research enterprise, and have pedagogical skills to teach in relevant scientific areas.
  • 5+ years of experience in higher education.
  • 5+ years of clinical experience.
  • Graduate from an accredited PA program .
  • Eligible for PA licensure in North Carolina .
  • Current NCCPA certification .
