Position Summary:

The Manager Signals is responsible for managing the performance, compliance, and documentation of Patriot Rail's highway-rail grade crossing signal systems. This role oversees contractors performing inspections and maintenance, ensures compliance with FRA Part 234, and supports the standardization of signal documentation and asset management across the network. Approximately 50% travel is required.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Oversee crossing signal inspections, testing, and maintenance activities performed by contractors and/or internal staff.
  • Ensure compliance with FRA Part 234 and internal policies by reviewing inspection reports and verifying that all defects are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Conduct field audits of contractor work to validate performance and adherence to Patriot Rail standards.
  • Maintain and update crossing signal inventory, including controller types, component details, and asset conditions.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop and implement standard operating procedures and inspection documentation.
  • Assist with planning and budgeting for capital improvements and signal system upgrades.
  • Support FRA audits and state inspections through preparation, participation, and response coordination.
  • Work closely with the Signal Construction Manager on new installations and capital projects.
  • Provide clear reporting on signal health, contractor performance, and compliance status to company leadership.



Qualifications:



  • 5+ years of experience in railroad signal systems or maintenance management.
  • Solid understanding of FRA regulations, particularly Part 234 (Grade Crossing Safety).
  • Proven ability to manage contractor performance, conduct audits, and drive accountability.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Experience reading and interpreting signal plans, controller wiring, and inspection records.
  • Comfortable using spreadsheets, digital forms, and asset tracking systems.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior experience in a supervisory role within a signal maintenance or capital planning team.
  • Familiarity with AREMA standards and railroad signal system components.
  • Experience standardizing processes or documentation across multiple railroad properties.



Additional Requirements:



  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or college degree preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Able to work outdoors and around active rail environments.
  • Must meet FRA vision and hearing requirements.
