SUMMARY:

We are currently seeking a Medical Technologist Specialist to join our Cytogenetics team. This fulltime role will work days with some on-call coverage.

Purpose of this position: Under general supervision, performs clinical laboratory testing of moderate to highly complex testing. Uses automated equipment and specialized processes for testing and accurately interpreting the results of blood and bodily fluids that are submitted to the laboratory being able to identify abnormal results

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Follows all laboratory established procedures and processes, including but not limited to patient identification, specimen collection, diagnostic clinical testing, and documentation and data entry into the laboratory information system and /or patient result logs
  • Based on training and protocol recognize, document, and communicate unusual and/or critical result values
  • Performs and monitors quality control processes, establish and monitor quality assurance and record keeping systems, participates in quality improvement programs, according the standard operating procedures to assure accuracy and validity of test results
  • Performs calibration, maintenance, and performance checks on instrumentation according to standard operating procedures and participates in the preparation and evaluation of maintenance schedules and operating procedures for new instrumentation, including writing technical procedures according to regulatory protocol
  • Performs troubleshooting processes for instrumentation, reagents, and inventory and/or patient samples as they occur and evaluates methods for solutions
  • Assists in the training/teaching of new staff members and/or student interns
  • Assists supervisor/team lead in operational department activities, including but not limited to scheduling, evaluation of new technologies, administration of QC programs, research and /or development projects, assists in the training/teaching of new staff members and/or student interns


In addition to the duties above, Medical Technology Specialists perform the following additional duties in specialized areas:

Cytogenetics:



  • Utilize karyotyping/ Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) imaging systems and fluorescent microscopes to analyze and capture cells
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize International Standing Committee on Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN) in reporting cytogenetic and FISH results
  • Utilize appropriate aseptic tissue culture techniques to maintain and harvest long-term cell cultures of amniotic fluid/skin/products of conception tissue
  • Exhibit customer service skills through direct contact with inside and outside clients to arrange for specimen transportation, to aid in correct test ordering, to communicate test results, and to answer billing questions

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Science
  • Completion of a CLS/MLS/MT training program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)

  • An approved equivalent combination of education and experience

License/Certifications:


    For Medical Technologists in the Cytogenetics Lab:


    • Current certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG (ASCP)

    • Eligible for certification as a Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG (ASCP)
    • As a condition of employment, those hired as "eligible" must take the first available examination after one year of employment and pass the certifying exam within two consecutive administrations of the exam within a 6 month period. (Certified within 24 months of hire date)
