A.I.S., Inc. AIS is looking for a Deep Sea Coral Researcher to serve as co-coordinator for the Northeast Region Deep Sea Coral Initiative and subsequent projects in support of the Habitat Ecology Branch (HEB).

Primary Function:

The Habitat Ecology Branch (HEB) is the lead for the Northeast Region Deep Sea Coral Initiative (NERDSCI), which requires the organization and implementation of field surveys, collection of biological samples, collection of video and still-photo images, and annotation and analyses of said images. In addition, HEB also analyzes imagery from databases operated by other organizational units within NOAA as well as non-NOAA entities.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Coordinating and conducting fieldwork and surveys, and assisting in the completion of dive summaries, site characterizations, and database entries.
  • Conduct Video and Image Analysis from NERDSCI and other sampling programs. Data collected from images captured as part of NERDSCI will be processed and formatted for data products required by the Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program. For other programs, data will be collected according to specific needs of the programs using standard technologies and methodologies.
  • Prepare data products associated with field surveys in accordance with the guidelines established by each research program
  • Perform database management for the NEFSC's deep-sea coral projects


Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on the candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Biology, Marine Science, or related fields; or B.Sc. with 3+ years of experience.
  • Ability to identify deep water fauna, particularly corals, sponges, most major invertebrates, and fishes.
  • Experience with analysis of video and still imagery
  • Experience writing publications and/or technical reports
  • Knowledge of oceanographic equipment and 3D geo-spatial processing and analysis tools such as Fledermaus.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and proficient in creating charts, maps, and analyzing benthic data and habitats



Travel:



  • Domestic and international travel may be required as follows: attendance at regional, national and international stock assessment related meetings, project-related workshops and working group meetings.
