Job Family Description

Occupational Health and Safety personnel ensure workplace environments comply with health and safety regulations and standards to prevent accidents, injuries, and health hazards. They conduct risk assessments, regular inspections, and audits to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions. They develop, implement, and train employees on health and safety processes, procedures, and protocols. They ensure organizational compliance with health and safety requirements from regulatory agencies. They review and provide input for hazards and controls in job safety analyses. They investigate incidents, analyze causes, and recommend corrective actions to mitigate risks that affect workers, property, the environment, and the general public.

Discipline Description

Industrial Hygienists evaluate and recommend controls for environmental, chemical, and physical hazards that can affect the health and well-being of workers, the general public, and the environment. Industrial Hygienists provide compliance-based oversight of operations to ensure that site activities are conducted in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations, DOE directives and orders and in a manner that will have minimal impact on workers, the public, and the environment. This includes identification, evaluation and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers. They review data and perform calculations in support of conducting hazard risk assessments depending on exposure agents and determining sampling strategies. They provide employees' exposure reports and educate employees on their potential exposures. They verify controls through sampling/monitoring of personnel performing an evaluated task, adjust controls based on results, and update the hazard risk assessment. Industrial Hygienist produce technical documents, articles, and presentations.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

Have extensive knowledge and understating of 29 CFR 1910, 29 CFR 1926 and 10 CFR 851 and apply it
Incorporates conventional Industrial Hygiene (IH) practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and programmatic planning where only general objectives are stated.
Performs comprehensive advanced theories and practices of IH by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors or stresses in the workplace.
Performs advanced predictive assessments of work exposures; design and conduct comprehensive exposure monitoring strategies.
Serves as Subject Matter Expert for specific IH disciplines as required by OSHA, ACGIH in accordance with DOE Orders.
Performs sitewide assessments of program effectiveness of any IH subject
Solves complex, unique problems where significant modification or adaptation of existing systems and
technology must be applied.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in relevant field plus at least five years of experience (YOE) in a relevant role, OR Master's degree in relevant field plus at least two years of experience (YOE), OR Doctoral degree in relevant field
* Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered

Security Clearance Information

SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug & alcohol test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance.
