Under close supervision, operates telemetry and hospital computer-based equipment and comprehends the capabilities of the cardiac monitoring system. Reports any unusual activity to nurse or charge nurse and documents communications according to the clinical care guideline. Manages equipment appropriately, providing prompt communication to the nurse leadership team.

Essential Functions:
  • Observes cardiac monitors to maintain consistent knowledge of any changes in monitor patterns and any potential lethal or dangerous dysrhythmias. Does not leave monitors unattended.

  • Notifies units promptly of changes to the patient's rhythm according to the telemetry guidelines. (10%)
  • Assists staff and physicians with reviewing monitor data.

  • Obtains and post rhythm strips on admission in patient records, once per shift or per unit policy, and more frequently if ordered by appropriate upper level management staff member.

  • Admits patients to the monitoring system, setting alarms per nursing staff directions or based on protocol, adjusting gain, and setting proper lead(s). (10%)
  • Liaisons between all units that provide cardiac / telemetry monitoring. (10%)
  • Responds to critical situations efficiently and with a sense of urgency. (10%)
  • Orients new staff.

  • Participates in the Peer Review Process. (5%)
  • Performs complete system check at the beginning of every shift to include alarms, dysrhythmia analysis and patient identification. (15%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Completed a certificate program or Associates Degree in a field that focuses on cardiovascular technologies preferred. Required or
  • High School Diploma or GED High School or GED plus successful completion of telemetry course.

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years Typically, one year experience in a health care setting providing patient service or equivalent based on a combination of experience and education. Required

    • Effective skills in communication, problem solving, interpersonal relationships and prioritization.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with peers and understand directions.
    • Ability to consistently function in an environment that includes varying, unpredictable, or crisis circumstances, while exercising appropriate interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
    • Ability to monitor all patients placed on telemetry monitoring.
