Purpose:

The Executive Director of SSHE will lead Genentech's South San Francisco Safety, Security, Health, and Environment (SSHE) organization, encompassing Security & Resilience (S&R) and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) functions. This critical organization safeguards Genentech's right to operate by proactively reducing risk and protecting our people, campus, environment, and scientific pipeline - locally, regionally, and, in select cases, globally.

This role will define and execute a forward-looking, multi-year vision and strategy for the organization, ensuring it evolves to meet the dynamic needs of the business and evolving campus vision strategy. This includes building the right capabilities - people, partnerships, processes, and technologies - to deliver innovation, measurable impact, and operational efficiency.

As a key leader at one of the largest sites in the Roche network, the Executive Director's decisions will directly influence Genentech's and Roche Group's ability to achieve vital global SHE objectives. Success in this highly visible role requires exceptional strategic leadership, operational and financial acumen, innovation fluency, regulatory expertise, and the ability to lead change and influence diverse stakeholders.

Due to the nature of the position, the Executive Director of SSHE can have a high degree of interface with the Genentech Executive Committee, Roche Executive Committee, Roche Board of Directors and Genentech Officer community.

Scope:

The Executive Director of SSHE reports to the Vice President, Genentech Site Services Operations and serves as a key member of the Site Services Leadership Group. In this capacity, the Executive Director contributes to the development and execution of Site Services-wide strategy, goals, and operational priorities.

This role holds enterprise accountability for ensuring compliance with all applicable Roche, local, state, and federal regulatory requirements across a broad scope of disciplines - including security, environmental protection, workplace safety, occupational health, health services, and ergonomics. While the primary focus is the South San Francisco campus, responsibilities extend to Genentech operations in Dixon, Portland, Washington, D.C., and other locations as needed. Additionally, the Executive Director leads and partners on regional (Bay Area and U.S.) initiatives supporting Roche's broader safety and security objectives.

The Executive Director serves as a strategic partner and subject matter expert to Roche Group Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), building strong collaborative relationships across Roche and Genentech to develop solutions to shared challenges, benchmark best practices, and contribute to global initiatives. The role also requires cultivating effective relationships with regulatory agencies and authorities, ensuring constructive dialogue and compliance with all applicable standards that protect Genentech's license to operate.

The Executive Director leads a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 80 regular employees, supplemented by a significant number of contingent workers and contract service partners. The team comprises technical specialists and client-facing SHE professionals. Direct reports include several Director-level leaders overseeing functions such as executive and workforce protection, crisis and risk management, intelligence and investigations, health services, and strategic business operations.

This role carries significant financial responsibility, managing an operating budget of approximately $60 million, including long-range financial forecasting, business case development, ROI analysis, and operational and financial performance dashboards.

This role is site-based. The Executive Director of SSHE is expected to be physically on site a majority of their working time (measured in days per week). The days of the week and the number of days may vary based on business needs.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure the security, health, safety, and wellbeing of personnel at multiple sites (SSF, Dixon, Portland, Washington DC, etc).

  • Define the long-term vision and strategy for the organization, including evolving its business and organizational model to ensure it has the capabilities to resourcefully meet emerging business needs and campus vision strategy with simplicity and efficiency.

  • Be a visible and engaged champion of Security, Environment, Health and Safety, including in building strong relationships with local and federal enforcement agencies. Play a pivotal role in building the influence and impact of Group SHE as a strategic partner.

  • Build and lead an aligned leadership team, composed of respected SSHE leaders who also inspire through their organizational leadership.

  • Oversee performance of core SSHE functions--ensuring regulatory compliance, conformance to Roche Directives and standards, and reducing/remediating risk through safety, occupational hygiene, health services, and environmental practices and standards. This includes readiness for internal/external audits.

  • Protect Genentech's right to operate with business continuity, fire life safety, physical access, disaster response and preparedness, and other core Security practices.

  • Drive necessary changes to ensure the function has the necessary capabilities and talent to predict and respond proactively to potential threats to the Genentech business.

  • Provide timely, accurate and relevant SHE data to enable business decisions. Ensure delivery to KPIs/metrics and cost efficiencies with Service Providers. Strategically manage resources to meet the needs of the business.

  • Leverage and champion relevant best practices and maintain connectivity, building relationships with Roche SHE and with industry thought leaders and other SHE functional leaders in regulated pharmaceutical and biomedical companies.Leads and/or contributes to Roche/Genentech global and regional committees that serve to solve shared challenges or drive continuous improvement across the organization.

  • Contract and oversee delivery of strategic service providers for responsibilities such as security systems integration and physical protection.

  • Serve as an advisory SME and provide consultation as requested to Roche Security, Safety, Health and Environment.

  • Broad experience managing efficient operations, including ensuring effective business process and metrics-driven alignment to achieve goals. Excellent planning and prioritization skills with the ability to multitask and adapt.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills (Minimum requirements):

  • Education: BA or BS in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Engineering, life sciences or related field; MBA or MS in relevant field preferred.

  • 15+ years business experience in progressively more responsible roles in relevant SHE functional areas, such as workforce protection, physical safety, environmental compliance, occupational health, sustainability and compliance assurance.

  • Deeply understands OSHA, EPA, DOT, NIOSH, FDA and other regulatory requirements applicable to cGMP and non-GMP environments.

  • At least 10 years leading multi-disciplinary teams and directly managing people. Experience leading employees, contractors and third party service providers is a must.

  • Exceptional leader of people-able to inspire and motivate teams to make a big impact and deliver their best every day. Track record of having the courage to make changes, while balancing risks and pacing for success. Role model for resilience and adaptability.

  • Outstanding analytical skills and financial acumen: capable of analyzing financial, quantitative and/or qualitative data and translating into high-impact learnings and recommendations on how to reduce risk and contribute in positive ways to the environment through sustainable practices.

  • Outstanding judgment and intuition for people and business risk: capable of quickly assessing and calmly navigating situations with natural instinct for when and how to act and influence within a complex, global corporate environment.

  • Experience managing a significant budget, meeting financial targets, improving business processes and driving cost savings.Demonstrated success consistently meeting performance metrics.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $226,100.00 - $419,900.00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
