Special Assets Group Commercial Underwriter II
The Special Assets Group Commercial Underwriter II is responsible for the underwriting and documentation of complex Special Assets (SAG) Credit Quality Review (CQR) credits. The SAG Commercial Underwriter II underwrites a variety of loan types and structures and may have expertise in one or more LOBs, owns deal analyses and executes workflow according to established guidelines, and assists in the on-going monitoring of the credit exposure for assigned CQR's.
Deal Breadth & Complexity: Works independently on complex transactions. Has strong knowledge on a broad range of deal types and across multiple lines of business.
Volume & Turnaround: Successfully manages and underwrites multiple deals at one time. Responsible for larger volume of moderately complex deals and consistently meets established turnaround times.
Position Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
- Provide complete analysis of new and existing SAG Credits to be included in SAG Approval Memos, Non-Accrual Recommendations, Risk Rating dowgrates/upgrades, and CQR commentary.
- Independently prepares and/or updates appropriate CQR documentation.
- Prepares collateral charts, cash flows, risk ratings, and other attachments.
- Provides detailed industry analysis and understand potential impacts on the client and credit request.
- Identifies policy exceptions and independently develop mitigants and structure modifications to address or eliminate.
- Identifies and analyzes inconsistencies and inaccuracies in customer data, including spreads, agings, projections and other financial documents.
- Formulates thoughtful and probing questions.
- Participates with or without the SAG Officer in client conversations to ensure thorough and complete analytical narrative and commentary on the request and makes recommendations on structural enhancements to mitigate risk.
- Evaluates strengths and weaknesses within each credit and escalates risks and other issues to SAG Officer.
- Independently recommend risk rating.
Administration
- Calculates loan covenants and assists with tracking for assigned CQR Credits.
- Follows-up with SAG Officer with recommendations.
- Works with SAG Officer as requested to resolve issues.
- Act as mentor to new and junior underwriters.
- Reviews work of new and junior underwriters and provides feedback to ensure completeness and quality.
Process Sustainability
- Adheres to department procedures for workload management.
- Strives to meet assigned workload deadlines, or when not possible, work with SAG Officer to consider other possible completion strategies.
- Ensures appropriate CQR and Approval formats/attachments are used in accordance with approved process & procedures.
- As available, join SAG Officer in site visits and on customer calls.
- Recommends process improvements in support of continuous improvement culture within Special Assets for efficiency and enhancement.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Business, Economics, or similar degree field; including the completion of two (2) Accounting courses (6 units) OR 4 years of equivalent experience
- Completion of Comerica's Credit College or other formal credit training
- 1 year of experience in commercial underwriting, credit and/or lending
- 1 year of experience with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday. This position includes onsite and remote work days.
