Director Patient Safety

General Summary of Position
Partners with the Medical Director for Patient Safety under general supervision of the Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) and the health system safety team to initiate proactive risk identification and mitigation by continuously assessing and executing a safety culture program aligned with the MedStar Health system approach. Develops close working relationships with entity and system level leaders to lead key safety culture initiatives and ensure entity compliance. Identifies metrics and processes to ensure that key parameters of the safety program are measured, monitored and continuously improved.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Medical Director for Patient Safety manages patient safety events (PSEs) with significant risk or harm, including SUOs and SSEs.
  • Performs and oversees in collaboration with the Medical Director for patient safety review events using the MedStar Health event review process for all SSEs and SUOs, as determined in coordination with the system AVP, Patient Safety. Ensures necessary peer reviews are completed for these cases and supports the implementation of resulting mitigations and monitoring for effectiveness and sustainability.
  • In partnership with the MedStar Health system Safety Team, initiates proactive risk identification and mitigation.
  • Continuously assesses and executes a safety culture program aligned with the MedStar Health system approach. Leads key safety culture initiatives and ensure entity compliance.
  • Oversees assessment of data to proactively anticipate major risks, while working with the local entity team and with the system to develop effective and sustainable solutions to improve patient safety across entities and MedStar Health.
  • Responsible for recruitment and retention, employee relations, performance management, ongoing feedback, coaching and professional development, and all other personnel actions of direct reports.
  • Actively participates and contributes to the work and execution of committees including but not limited to risk management, safety and quality committees and quality councils.
  • Organizes and supports the Quality Outcomes Council.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides reports for entity Board and Leadership meetings (more granular and shorter lag data than systemlevel data).
  • Provides staff support to medical staff departmental meetings as assigned.
  • Supports PI Manager and teams for performance improvement projects determined by MedStar system and Quality Service Line Leadership. This responsibility extends across the region. Acts as project manager for local performance improvement projects. Utilizes Performance Improvement tools for all projects and supports completion of action plans.
  • Works with Chairs of hospital departments to complete and run OPPE reports.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Factors, Health Administration, Healthcare (ie: APP, nursing, pharmacy, PT/OT) Clinical Data. required and
    • Master's degree preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 10+ years Experience with electronic health records, occurrence reporting systems and other data systems. required and
    • Experience working within a team environment as member, facilitator, and process manager. Proven record of managing projects to successful completion. required and

    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Working knowledge of robust safety management program operations, program operations, processes, and policies
    • Demonstrated understanding of performance improvement mechanisms and data experience working effectively with patient safety officers, risk management teams, other leaders, and front-line staff.
    • Ability to work effectively with patient safety officers, risk management teams, other leaders, and front-line staff
    • Knowledge of Safety Science
    • Strong communication, organizational, and planning skills.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple, complex projects simultaneously
    • Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
    • Documentation skills including collaboration on report metrics, strong skills in relationship management in both leadership and staff environments.
    • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with high level of problem-solving capabilities

    This position has a hiring range of $111,779 - $212,513
