The Principal, Molding & Tooling Engineering leads strategic and technical initiatives related to injection molding processes, mold/tooling design, and manufacturing optimization. This role ensures tooling solutions are innovative, cost-effective, scalable, and meet performance and quality standards. The Principal Engineer will collaborate cross-functionally with design, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to support new product introduction (NPI) and continuous improvement across global operations. In this role, a typical day will include:

1. Tooling and Mold Design Leadership

  • Lead and approve the design, development, and validation of injection molds and tooling systems.
  • Review and refine mold designs for manufacturability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
  • Provide technical guidance to internal and external tooling suppliers during mold build and qualification.

2. Injection Molding Process Development

  • Define and optimize injection molding processes for new and existing products.
  • Conduct process capability studies, DOE (Design of Experiments), and root cause analysis to improve quality and throughput.
  • Oversee mold trials, validation runs (IQ/OQ/PQ), and process documentation.

3. Strategic Planning & Innovation

  • Scout and evaluate advanced tooling technologies (e.g., conformal cooling, hot runners, multi-shot, insert molding).
  • Recommend capital investments and tooling standardization initiatives.

4. Project Management

  • Lead tooling-related aspects of cross-functional NPI programs from concept to ramp-up.
  • Maintain project timelines, cost targets, and risk mitigation plans.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and global teams.

5. Technical Mentorship & Compliance

  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians on best practices in tooling and molding.
  • Ensure tooling designs meet relevant regulatory, safety, and quality standards
  • Maintain documentation and change control in compliance with internal and external quality systems.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience
